Member Update

To all our Members, Directors, Executive, Committee Members, and Staff

With the holiday season upon us once again, my wife Carol and I would like to personally wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year.

As MCA Canada’s Chairman, I’ve travelled from coast to coast and thoroughly enjoyed meeting members from all across our amazing country.  I would especially like to thank everyone in Newfoundland and Labrador for making our 73rd Annual National Conference in St. John’s such a huge success.

The convention wasn’t our only substantial achievement this year. Among the many major projects was the creation of our new Construction Education Council (CEC). As a Council of MCA Canada, CEC has transformed itself into the foremost delivery vehicle for construction education in Canada.

Another division within MCA Canada, the Mechanical Service Contractors of Canada (MSCC) has increased its focus on recruitment, new ‘Career Patch’ educational programs and the promotion of our national certification program. 2015 should produce a considerably higher profile for MSCC and its members.

Working with allied organizations has also been a wonderful experience.  We continue to work on establishing federal "Prompt Payment Legislation" as a founding member of the National Trade Contractors Coalition of Canada (NTCCC). We are also working closely with several provincial entities that are focused on bringing "Prompt Payment" to their province. Also, MCAC is working with the design community to increase the quality of Plans and Specifications along with trying to establish a national standard on Change Orders.

We are continuing our work with the Canadian Energy Efficiency Alliance (CEEA) seeking to clarify and expand certain outdated deductibility rules so that building owners have an incentive to upgrade their buildings with more energy efficient products. The ongoing work to strengthen the Red Seal program continues as we work through the pilot project to develop a new occupational standard for the gasfitter/steamfitter trades.

This past year, your Association was involved in many industry-related organizations, such as the Canadian Construction Association, the Canadian Standards Association, the National Research Council, the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum, the World Plumbing Council, the International Alliance of MCA's, the Gold Seal Certification Committee, BuildForce Canada (formerly the Construction Sector Council), the Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating and the Mechanical Contractors Association of America. We will continue to work with these fine organizations in 2015!

Of course we can’t go through all of the projects we are involved in, I just wanted to remind you of the ongoing work the volunteers and staff are engaged in on your behalf.  That being said, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all MCA Canada Members, our Executive Committee and our Board of Directors, all our Association Managers and their staff, as well as the national staff at MCA Canada for all the support this past year. And I look forward to working with you all next year.
I wish to extend my entire family's warmest wishes to all of you during this festive season, a very Merry Christmas, and a happy and prosperous New Year.

Industry News
Based on the latest economic statistics, it appears that year-to-date economic growth on both sides of the Canada/U.S. border is stronger than was initially reported by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), as well as by Statistics Canada. The picture of Canada's economic health was brightened by revised data. After initially reporting that the economy expanded by 3.1% in the second quarter, Statistics Canada revised its Q2 growth estimate to 3.6%, its fastest quarterly gain in almost three years

The Government of Canada is about to launch Express Entry in January 2015. It is a great new tool that can help you with your hiring initiatives and will offer you an additional option as you build your workforce. If you are unable to fill a position in your workforce with a Canadian or permanent resident you can consider permanently hiring an experienced skilled foreign worker through Express Entry.
