The Association of Consulting Engineering Companies - Canada (ACEC) has released a report that it hopes will guide consulting engineers and owners in creating sustainable projects. "Sustainable Development for Canadian Consulting Engineers," by Dr. John Boyd, an internationally recognized authority on sustainability, identifies practices and tools developed by the global engineering community to help tackle the issue of sustainability.
That Canada has been a magnet for immigrants — many of them highly sought-after skilled workers — is well-documented, and that continues to be an issue close to the country’s economic core. But we’re facing increasing competition from other major economies — the United States, Germany and the U.K., for sure — as well as from fiscally challenged countries like Spain, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Innovation and Technology
Flux, a provider of collaborative design software for the building construction industry, is hoping to spread design knowledge and improve the accessibility of design tools in order to help meet the world’s demand for durable, sustainable buildings. The founding team sought a radical solution to reduce the environmental footprint of buildings, while simultaneously addressing rising demand for buildings driven by rapid urbanization. "The power required to heat, cool, light, and power devices in the places we live and work is responsible for 40% of our carbon emissions. Much of this power is wasted due to inadequate design, antiquated technology, and poor construction quality," noted Michelle Kaufmann, co-founder and architect.
The kind of extreme weather conditions climatologists are predicting due to global warming could spell dire consequences for people’s well-being and safety if developers continue to build to minimum standards, rather than adapting to resiliency-based standards required because of climate change. The International Panel on Climate Change, 2014 (IPCC) recently made an urgent call to take adaptive action immediately because of climate change. Think polar vortex, ice storms, flash floods, record heat waves, droughts, tornadoes and coastal storms – all the result of a warming climate. "The housing and construction industries have made advances toward climate change mitigation by incorporating energy efficiency in building design," the IPCC report’s chapter on from extreme weather events."
