Member Update
MCA Canada would like to welcome our newest Associate Member - Holdrite. The last three decades have seen HOLDRITE® evolve from a single product family business to an international corporation and acknowledged industry leader. Hundreds of millions of HOLDRITE® products have been installed into a wide variety of projects from single-family and multi-family housing to hotels, motels, health-care institutions and many other market sectors. By understanding both the large project perspective and specific application requirements, HOLDRITE® has developed solutions that assist in establishing a "shop standard" for the collaborative efforts of developers, architects, engineers and contractors. HOLDRITE® has established a reputation as a leading manufacturer known for innovative products and services in such categories as pipe support systems, acoustical plumbing solutions and water heater accessories. HOLDRITE® continues to develop innovative products that support Copper, PEX, CPVC tubing, and other material types.
HOLDRITE® offers value-added No Cost Services to the contractor to assist with multiple stages in the project. These VIP services include specification and submittal assistance, 3-D product drawings, custom detail application pages, and material "take-off" assistance to help plan for product inventory levels.
April 1- 3, 2014 - Delegates from across Canada came together in Saskatoon last week for 3 days of educational seminars. During the conference, delegates focused on how to work more cohesively with other trades, general contractors, suppliers, employees, their own construction team and owners. This cohesiveness allows each component of the project to be significantly more successful. Educational Conferences are not just about the hands-on education, they are also about networking opportunities and the chance to learn from each other, a truly invaluable asset. Events such as the Middle Management Conference could not take place without the generous support of our sponsors. CMCEF would like to gratefully thank the following: Platinum Sponsors - MCA Saskatchewan and Victaulic; Gold Sponsors - Peak Mechanical Partnership, IPEX and Derksen Mechanical Systems; Silver Sponsors - AON and Mid City Plumbing and Heating Inc. Thank you for supporting education in our industry!!
Fred W. Welsh - It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the passing of Fred Welsh, a long standing member of MCA British Columbia and the construction industry. Fred passed away peacefully with his family by his side while vacationing in Maui following a brief battle with cancer. Fred was past president/owner of Fred Welsh Ltd., a company founded over 80 years ago by his grandfather. In 2010, he passed the company on to his sons Chris and Andrew Welsh and Michael Ohlmann. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Judy, sons Christpher and Andrew and grandchildren Walker, Evan and Erin. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.
Industry News
The Canada Green Building Council and McGraw Hill Construction are seeking industry participation on a new study of green building in Canada. The study will offer key insights on the level and type of green activity in Canada, as well as the drivers and obstacles impacting the Canadian green building market, through a survey of building owners, architects and contractors. The results of the survey will be published in a report by the Canada Green Building Council that will be widely disseminated, both in and outside of Canada. The survey will take approx.15 minutes to complete, and it will be open until April 14. Click on the link to take the survey now.
Since its inception one year ago, the Canadian Construction Association's (CCA) drug and alcohol taskforce has been a catalyst for the conversation that no one in the industry was having before, says one of its key supporters. In those 12 months, the taskforce has surveyed businesses about their needs regarding drug and alcohol policy, discovering that many small businesses do not have a policy of their own.
The government of Ontario has announced that it will launch an independent review of its Construction Lien Act as soon as possible. The decision is in response to concerns raised by general contractors, owners and others about the proposed Bill 69 Prompt Payment Act, which has already passed its second reading.

Education and Training
Registration is now open for the next "Estimating – Project Procurement and Strategies" seminar. The Canadian Mechanical Contracting Education Foundation's "2014 Estimating – Project Procurement and Strategies" program deals specifically with these four issues and is intended primarily for those responsible for project procurement. Please note this is not a seminar dealing with quantity survey and pricing. This seminar deals with the Bid/No Bid decision process, the Proposal, the Final Summary and an opportunity to make a sales presentation to an actual customer.
Innovation and Technology
Canadian Construction Innovations (CCInnovations) aims to lead the charge on the innovation front in the construction industry instead of being led, explained CCInnovations chair Paul Verhesen during the presentation entitled 'Who's Driving the Boat: Industry vs. Technology' at the Canadian Construction Association's (CCA) 96th annual conference.
