Prompt payment comes into force in Saskatchewan

The Mechanical Contractors Association of Saskatchewan can now close the books on an advocacy file that began back in 2015.

Prompt payment officially comes into force in Saskatchewan on March 1, and will take effect all new contracts signed on or after that day.

Contractors will have the right to expect payment within 28 days of issuing a proper invoice. As well, undisputed portions of an invoice can no longer have payment withheld while disputed portions are undergoing the adjudication process.

The newly formed Saskatchewan Construction Dispute Resolutions Office will manage disputes quickly, efficiently and in a cost-effective manner. If a contractor still has not been paid after an adjudication ruling in their favour, they will have the right to walk off the jobsite.

The success of this lobbying effort can be attributed to the associations who came together for a common cause under the banner of Prompt Payment Saskatchewan. Representatives from the following organizations sat on the working committee: Saskatchewan Construction Association, General Contractors Association of Saskatchewan, Electrical Contractors Association of Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan Masonry Institute, Canadian Institute of Steel Construction, Saskatchewan Roofing Contractors Association, Saskatchewan Association of Architects, and the Mechanical Contractors Association of Saskatchewan.
