How You Can Save Money With The Right Faucets

In a world where we are increasingly aware of our environment and the impact human behaviour has upon it, people are taking more responsibility for our precious resources, like water.

It’s amazing how a few small changes in your home can ensure you drastically slash the amount of water you use — in a manner that is practically unnoticeable and will save you money.

"If you think it’s impossible to be ‘green’ yet be stylish at the same time, think again," says Mark Wallace of the Stanley Black & Decker Hardware and Home Improvement Group. "There is a full range of kitchen and bathroom faucets that will not only improve the look of your room, but will slash your water use by as much as a third."

Water saving kitchen and bath faucets don’t drip or leak and are engineered to stringent environmental standards for performance and efficiency. Using a Pasadena bath faucet from Pfister’sWaterSense line reduces the water flowing out of it by 30%. Using similar water-saving faucets and showerheads around your home can reduce your water use by an estimated 113,500 litres (30,000 gallons), enough to fill an in-ground backyard swimming pool that is 6 metres by 12 metres (20’ by 40’).

Not only will you be doing the planet a favour, but you will also be saving yourself money — water conservation efforts through new faucets can save you more than $170 on your water bill and will reduce your energy consumption. Using less water means heating less water. If just 20 out of every 100 homes in Canada installed water-saving fixtures, electricity consumption would fall by 100 million kilowatts. That’s equivalent to taking 15,000 cars off the road for a year —saving the equivalent of about 80,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

Here are a few simple tips to help you save thousands of litres of water each month:
• Aerators can save 1,900 litres (500 gallons) of water each year.
• Save 75 litres (20 gallons) of water per day for every leak fixed.
• Shortening showers saves 2,650 litres (700 gallons) per month for every minute.

"With a few small changes, you can make a big difference," says Wallace. "Saving water will protect the environment, sustain our water resources for future generations and save you money."
