Peel Region Votes to Reduce Development Charges

Peel Regional Council has voted to reduce development charges by 50% from July 10, 2025, to November 13, 2026, in order to makes homes in Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon more affordable. The hope is that this will help kickstart some development that has lagged in the area recently.

This is an initiative that many in the new home construction industry have been pushing for. Peter Turkstra of Turkstra Lumber has been an advocate for the reduction in development charges by all Ontario municipalities. Peel is one of the few who have listened to the industry and reduces their fees.

"We applaud and welcome the change and encourage other regions across the GTA to look at doing similar actions, and we want to thank the provincial government for their support in this matter. It's a really good day today for prospective home buyers who are looking for a new home in the Region of Peel, [...] and the decision comes at a time where the industry is struggling. It's a very positive move," Justin Sherwood, Senior Vice President of Communications, Research & Stakeholder Relations at BILD

This comes at a time when new home construction starts have drastically fallen across the GTA. This dramatic decrease in construction permits has reduced the inflow of fees to local municipalities.

The LBMAO hopes that Peel is not alone in realizing that high development fees effect new home prices. Our industry needs to get back on track building the new homes that the Ontario consumers need.
