Schell Lumber Home Building Centre Celebrates 100 Years in Business

Schell Lumber Home Building Centre is proudly celebrating 100 years of serving the Stouffville, Ontario community. The local Home store has been in the Schell family since it was founded in 1922 and ownership has been passed down through four generations.

“I have learned a lot from my family about how to run a successful business over the years, but the most valuable advice came from my great grandfather Wes Schell,” said Kyle Schell, Dealer-Owner, Schell Lumber Home Building Centre. “He always said that your team members work with you, not for you. I think our customers can see the impact of this through the excellent service we deliver. It is clear our employees know they are valued members of our team, and they take pride in that. That’s why we have been so successful.”

Over the past century, Schell Lumber Home Building Centre has provided helpful advice and quality products to countless customers looking to build a new fence, deck, home, or even a subdivision. Whatever the project or the ask, the team goes above and beyond and is incredibly thankful for the support they’ve received from their customers and community.

The store was founded a century ago by Wes Schell as Stouffville Planing Mill and is currently owned by fourth-generation Dealer-Owner, Kyle Schell, and his uncle, Steve Schell. Steve has been involved with the store for 49 years and previously co-owned the store with the late Ron Schell, who passed this spring.

“We have 13 Schell family members involved at the store today including two of my own sons,” said Steve Schell, Dealer-Owner, Schell Lumber Home Building Centre. “Working with your family is great. At the end of the day, you win or lose together. There’s a special trust in that.”

The Schell family are lucky enough to say that they have indeed “won.” They have earned the trust of the Stouffville community and the store has more than

doubled in size since its inception, now boasting 13,000 square feet of retail space and an expanded yard. The family also opened a second Schell Lumber Home Building Centre in Sutton, Ontario, in 2001, which they have plans to expand in the next few years.

“Customers in Stouffville know the home improvement expertise and product knowledge provided by the Schell family and their team. It is a tremendous asset to their community,” said Kevin Macnab, President and CEO, Home Hardware Stores Limited. “On behalf of the Dealer-Owners of the close to 1,100 Home Hardware stores across Canada, I would like to congratulate everyone at Schell Lumber Home Building Centre on their anniversary and wish them continued success.”

To mark the store’s centennial anniversary, the store held a special celebration on Sunday, June 12.

Wiener’s Home Hardware Celebrates 100 Years in Business

Wiener’s Home Hardware is proudly celebrating 100 years of serving the Annex community in Toronto, Ontario. The Wiener family began their journey in the home improvement industry in 1922 and became a charter member of Home Hardware Stores Limited when it was founded in 1964.

“We owe everything to my parents, grandparents and great grandparents who set the bar incredibly high when it comes to business excellence,” said Marty

Wiener, Dealer-Owner, Wiener’s Home Hardware. “We are so proud to be part of Home Hardware, an iconic Canadian brand, and as I watch my own daughter Melanie prepare to move into the role of Dealer-Owner, I know she will continue that level of excellence for years to come.”

“To carry on the legacy of Wiener’s Home Hardware means a great deal to me,” said Melanie Wiener, who will be the fourth generation of the Wiener family to run the business. “I have essentially grown up in this store, and I take deep pride in what my family has built here. I look forward to serving the Annex in my future role as Dealer- Owner.”

Melanie’s great grandparents, Hyman and Ida Wiener, purchased the small hardware store on Bloor St. West in 1922. Their youngest son, Gerry, joined the family business after high school and then Gerry’s son, Marty, joined the business full time after finishing university.

“Our family values the support we’ve received from our customers and community and has always prioritized offering exceptional customer service,” added Marty. “The Annex certainly holds a special place in our hearts, and we’re so fortunate to have been here for 100 years and counting. Whether it’s power tools, lawn and garden supplies or paint, our team has helped countless customers complete all their DIY projects.”

“The Wiener family continues to prove their customer service is second to none,” said Kevin Macnab, President and CEO, Home Hardware Stores Limited. “Celebrating a century in business is an incredible accomplishment, and on behalf of all of our Dealer-Owners, I would like to congratulate Wiener’s Home Hardware. I wish them all the best in the future, and I know they will continue to do a tremendous job in serving the Annex community.”

To celebrate this milestone, Wiener’s Home Hardware closed off the street and held a block party outside their store on June 18. Community members and customers were welcomed by the Wiener family with food and beverages to look back and reflect on the past 100 years of business in the Annex.
