KSHE Update

Greetings everyone. We have made it through the first quarter of 2021, and things are looking pretty great. The pandemic seems to have turned a corner and is beginning to slow down. The vaccine seems to be working as we all hoped it would. I hope our new president is right and we can have a normal 4th of July celebration this year.

Spring is here, and it is beautiful outside. It seemed to go from a snowstorm to spring weather in about a week’s time. That’s Kentucky weather. Of course, with the spring weather comes the summer prep. It’s time for coil cleaning, filter changes, all the routine maintenance that comes with the bloom in spring.

Your KSHE Board has appointed a committee that has been busy preparing updates to our KSHE By-Laws. They are on schedule to have a copy for your review later this summer that will allow us to have a formal vote at the annual conference in September. Your Education Committee has rolled out the first of our new lunch and learn webinars, which seemed to be very successful. Our goal is to be able to offer at least one of these sessions every month this year. Watch your emails for available times.

Safe Day One and the CHC programs have started off the year very successfully. Please encourage your contractors to take advantage of these programs to learn how important it is to be safe and careful while working inside of our healthcare facilities. The Safe Day One program and ASHE’s CHPEW certification are also a very good competency programs to show regulatory compliance during survey activities. Several hospitals use Safe Day One as new hire orientation as well as annual competency for in-house staff. There is a link on our website to Safe Day One, and the next CHC is scheduled during our conference in September in Owensboro.

So let’s go outside and enjoy some of this fine weather before the rainy season sets in.

Thanks you for all you do,

Martin Wheatley, CHE, CHFM
President, Kentucky Society of Healthcare Engineers
