August Healthcare Facilities Leadership Update

Greetings from the HFL program at OCTC!

It is hard to believe that the HFL program will be turning five in a couple of months. With each passing semester newly minted credentials, growing program offerings, and student success stories are growing as the program matures. I would like to share a little bit on each.

For those of you who attended the business meeting at the Healthcare Coalition Conference in Owensboro you had the opportunity to take part in the presentation to Randy French who works at LaGrange Baptist for completing the HFL degree program!  Unfortunately, Chris Buford from UK was unable to attend to receive well deserved recognition for his HFL degree achievement. Both Randy and Chris were part of the very first classes and demonstrated a level of perseverance and dedication to the HFL program and the profession! Please welcome me in congratulating both!

In recent updates I have been sharing growing discussion and support for academic and apprenticeship credentials for technicians working in healthcare facilities. Meetings with state and national representatives are being held in the month of November to discuss how to move this forward. I am expecting to have big news for 2019.  The need to recruit and develop the next generation of healthcare facility professionals is as important now than any time in our professions history. I hope you will join me in this effort!

I had the opportunity a few weeks ago to visit a former Kentucky resident at his new facility in Florida a couple of weeks ago. Ronnie Cecil, formerly of Owensboro, is also a graduate this year of the HFL program. Ronnie works for Lee Health and is now the director of a new healthcare facility that is opening in December. I cannot begin to tell you how excited and proud Ronnie is of his facility. He gave me a great tour of the facility. Ronnie has a central plant that is the envy of the state. Not only is it beautiful, it was designed to nearly eliminate environmental noise, even when the generators are running. You can see Ronnie’s pride standing in front of his new facility!

Looking forward to sharing future updates! Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Best,

Mike Canales, Healthcare Facilities Leadership Program Director
