KSHE EDUCTION UPDATE- August 2018

Greetings KSHE Members,

For those of you who did not attend the annual ASHE conference in Seattle, you might have still felt the seismic activity here at home. The educational efforts of KSHE over these many years were on display at many of the venues. From the leadership meeting to the Region 3 meeting during seminars and even during current ASHE president Brad Taylor's business meeting message, the culmination of KSHE chapter and educational efforts were shaking Seattle.

First, Safe Day One (formerly CHT) was trumpeted by ASHE as an excellent educational tool for all technicians entering healthcare and also as a recommended method for preparing those wishing to take ASHE’s new contractor technician certification test, called Certified Healthcare Physical Environment Worker. Safe Day One will be placed on the ASHE website as a preparatory tool. KSHE also joined the Texas, Oklahoma and Virginia ASHE chapters in rolling out Safe Day One as a comprehensive healthcare orientation tool! The amount of work your KSHE board did to bring this to fruition is more than admirable!

Another big educational effort by KSHE that shakes up the old way of doing things is our focus on Tool Box Training as part of our efforts to advance the profession and bring member value. Not only will we have a full-day track at our annual conference in Owensboro this year, but we are also delivering training to technicians at their facilities. In June, Muhlenberg Community Hospital personnel received training on NFPA 80 door inspections and related accreditation issues. The staff were very receptive to the training, and the education and fun were appreciated by all. KSHE was able to share how we are meeting our membership growth with educational value and resources. Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown is up next for KSHE personnel training.

The last educational effort I will mention here briefly (and in more detail with the HFL update) has to do with alignments and growing support for a national academic and certification credential for technicians. A half dozen years ago, your KSHE board had the foresight and commitment to establish an academic path for healthcare facilities leadership. This year at Seattle, ASHE and many healthcare facilities have fully endorsed not just the current HFL program at OCTC, but also the next phase of creating academic and national certification for technicians through the HFL program. In my opinion, this will likely have the greatest future impact on the healthcare facilities profession. For more information on this and more, read the Healthcare Facilities Leadership program update.

I think you will agree with me that the annual conference in Seattle will be the conference that changed the landscape of our profession. I hope you are planning to take advantage of these great opportunities, and I hope to see many of you at the upcoming annual conference in Owensboro!
