NACAS News

Last week, NACAS held its annual Leadership Team Meeting in Las Vegas, at which our Board of Directors, the NACAS Foundation Board of Directors, regional leadership, and committee chairs gather to discuss progress towards various initiatives and set the vision for the year. This year's LTM focused on developing our three-year strategic plan, gathering feedback on some exciting new resources coming to the membership this year, and discussing how benchmarking is relevant to the auxiliary services professional. The majority of the time was used to set the organization's strategic goals towards:

- Being recognized as a thought leader, trusted resource, and industry expert on auxiliary services in higher education
- Providing programs and services to meet the needs of the auxiliary professional
- Enhancing the value of membership to increase retention, recruitment, inclusivity, and engagement

It was a productive and informative time together with the organization's leadership, and also a great opportunity for peer-to-peer engagement among our volunteers. We also explored an exciting new event that we hope to bring to this year's C3X - so we hope to see you there!

The Ladson Diversity Scholarship was established in 2005 in honor of the late Mereese Ladson, Controller at Brooklyn College (CUNY). Joe Eggleston, CASP is the Assistant Vice-President for Auxiliary Operations at the Southern California University of Health Sciences.

1. Being from a small institution with fewer than 1,000 full time enrolled students, how does your auxiliary operation differ from larger institutions' auxiliary departments?

Here at SCU, Auxiliary Operations is definitely a "jack of all trades" division. We handle Campus Safety, Emergency Management, Physical Plant, Risk Management, Workers’ Compensation, Regulatory Compliance, in addition to the traditional auxiliary departments such as Food, Conference, and Store services.

2. What's something that your institution has implemented in the past year that you'd recommend for other small institutions?

I have two recommendations that I can strongly recommend. The first is monthly, campus wide emergency drills (including lockdowns, evacuations, etc.). The second is – if you’ve not already started – invest in creating customized stickers. Yes... stickers! From a financial standpoint they have fantastic margins (though significant revenue obviously requires LOTS of quantity), and they are a great beacon for campus pride and employee creativity.
