Meet our new Director of Education & Certification

E. Anne Wachtmeister earned an undergraduate degree at Northeastern University in Boston, and then went on to earn her law degree from the University of New Hampshire’s School of Law. As an attorney, Wachtmeister represented Native Americans in subsistence rights cases. As a public defender in Boston, she specialized in representing youth in serious felony matters. Seeking a more proactive role in the lives of young people, Wachtmeister earned her master’s degree in education from Harvard University and transitioned into counseling and teaching. As the director of the Peer Mediation Program at The English High School/Boston and then as the student services coordinator at Boston International High School, Wachtmeister joined fellow faculty members in leading transformative service learning trips with her students to destinations both nationally and abroad. Inspired by her students and their passion for global experiences and community service, Wachtmeister developed Caribbean Connections and Discovery Grove, an experiential learning program and eco-retreat located on St. Croix, an island in the US Virgin Islands. What drew her to NACAS is a shared belief that the foundation of creating relevant professional development and certification opportunities for our current and potential members is by providing quality education experiences that expand knowledge and build connections that count, both personal and professional.

AIM was a great success!
The NACAS 2014 Advanced Institute for Managers (AIM), hosted by the University of Notre Dame, was a great success. Thank you to Scott Kachmarik, director of Auxiliary Services, for having the vision to host this year’s Institute. The presentations were engaging and dynamic, and we could not have accomplished such career development learning opportunities without the generous time and expertise shared by our NACAS speakers: Melissa Moore, Bob Brown, Rob Hailey, Ron Campbell, and Ray Jensen. We are also grateful to David Harr, associate vice president for auxiliary operations; Colleen O’Connor, coordinator, communications & special projects; and Dawn Howard, senior events specialist, for their time and expertise to help make AIM 2014 a terrific experience. From the beautiful accommodations at the "new" Morris Inn to the delicious food and stellar planning, the University of Notre Dame took AIM 2014 to the highest level. Equally important, the ideas generated and shared by participants and presenters from the across the country and the world relating to contract and program management, becoming an entrepreneur, marketing auxiliary services, as well as recognizing the human moments in the work we do with colleagues and our students, were top notch. Not only did the opportunities for collaboration via the group case studies inspire Notre Dame to continue to move forward in creating the best Irish1Card possible, but the time together also inspired all of us to be the best we can be in our professional leadership roles.

Would you like to host an Institute?

Membership
In 2010, when Western Kentucky University officials planned a two-year, $54 million renovation of Downing University Center (DUC), they knew there would be challenges. Built 43 years ago, the university’s student center was still running much of its original equipment. Since the building houses services that are crucial to students, including the WKU Store, the I.D. Center, the Post Office, Vending Services, and WKU Restaurant Group, it was not an option to shut everything down during the renovation. They needed a way to feed hungry students throughout the project.

The Johns Hopkins University Community Safety Program is a partnership of the Johns Hopkins University Campus Safety and Security, AlliedBarton Security Services, and the Baltimore Police Department. Johns Hopkins University is a private institution with an unarmed campus security department. The goals of this continuing partnership are utilizing the students, faculty, staff, and community to assist in deterring crime; educating students and local residents on safety in an urban environment; and strengthening community relations. Two initiatives that have contributed to the overall decline in violent crime on campus and the adjacent Charles Village neighborhood are the Hopkins Crime Watch and the Hopkins Neighborhood Walkers on Patrol.
