News From ISTAT
As the first ISTAT Asia to take place in Hong Kong, the 2014 conference was a memorable event for the more than 360 attendees who were treated to presentations geared specifically to the challenges and opportunities of the Asian market. The event took place from 4-6 May at The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong. As in past years, there were many first-time attendees (about 40 percent), and a majority of the group said they would attend next year's ISTAT Asia in Singapore, based on an on-site survey. Airline attendance was also very strong with several airlines in attendance. According to ISTAT Asia chairmen, David Swan, chief operating officer, SMBC Aviation Capital, and Steven Townend, deputy managing director and chief commercial officer (Europe, Americas, Africa), BOC Aviation, the committee's goal was to have a more Asia-focused agenda and speakers to differentiate the topics from those at other ISTAT events, such as the Japanese tax lease financing, the C919 Program by COMAC, financial market liquidity and the continued growth of Asian players. There were many new faces on stage, and each panel represented speakers from countries throughout the Asia Pacific region, including India, Japan, China and Australia. Adrian Mowat, M.D. and chief emerging market and Asian equity strategist, JP Morgan, presented the keynote speech, followed by a session introducing the conference location: "Hong Kong, A Leading Global Financial Centre" by Simon Galpin, director general, HK Invest. "Market sentiment from the stage and among the crowd was very positive," Swan said. "Demand for aircraft has definitely stepped up in the past year by both airlines and an increasing number of new entrant investors. There's a lot of funding liquidity, trading and financing of aircraft at the moment. Mid-life aircraft are also now more popular with investors." Consolidation in the leasing sector was another major topic of discussion at this conference. Both the OEM panel and the appraisal panel featured edgy and active discussion, thanks to the excellent moderation and speakers supported by very active audience Q&A. Look for more highlights and photos from the event in the upcoming Summer issue of Jetrader magazine.

Foundation Happenings
By Todd Freeman
Chairman, ISTAT Foundation

Rounding out my first year as Foundation chair, I'm very pleased with our work in progress and proud of some early accomplishments. The Foundation remains strong financially. ISTAT Board support is up, and our fundraising over the last year hit new highs thanks to our many generous donors and the work of our Fundraising Committee under the leadership of Tom Heimsoth. Our three Diamond Plus Rountable contributors—Omni Air International, Diane Ballweg and The Batchelor Foundation—alone were responsible for $600,000 of Foundation financial support.

Scholarships remain as our most important area of giving. There were 30 deserving recipients this past year. Our global outreach continues—nearly half of the scholars were from outside the U.S. and our global university outreach continues to grow. After more than five years of leadership, Dana Lockhart is passing the Scholarship Committee chair position to Peter Huijbers. We thank Dana for all his contributions and welcome Peter to his new role.

Bloomberg In a global marketplace where problems are increasingly complex, no one person will ever have all the answers. That’s why Google’s SVP of People Operations, Lazlo Bock, says humility is one of the traits he’s looking for in new hires. A recent Catalyst study backs this up, showing that humility is one of four critical leadership factors for creating an environment where employees from different demographic backgrounds feel included.

Forbes Although in theory diverse teams benefit from differences in perspectives and approaches, in practice having a group of people who are different from each other can create conflict. To smooth out the working relationships, people in these teams may become more alike, at least in attitude and behavior. Simply working together in proximity is known to make people converge in how they do their work. Their differences become less pronounced.

BRW Work/life balance is at best an elusive ideal and at worst a complete myth, today’s senior executives will tell you. But by making deliberate choices about which opportunities they’ll pursue and which they’ll decline, rather than simply reacting to emergencies, leaders can and do engage meaningfully with work, family and community.
