During the 2013 Annual Conference on Explosives and Blasting Technique in Fort Worth, Texas, the ISEE Board of Directors unanimously voted to fill a vacant seat on the board by appointing a student director for 2014. Because of the success of this appointment, the ISEE board would like to continue its efforts to have student representation.

The 2015 appointment will run concurrently with the presiding ISEE President’s term, but for a one-year period, and will consist of a selected member of a student chapter of the ISEE. The selected student director must have approval and support from his or her student chapter and Institution prior to applying for the position.

The deadline to apply is June 15, 2014.

An illegally dumped, tangled mess of unexploded blasting caps, forced the temporary closure of the North Valley Creek Container in Montana on April 2.

The first batch of caps were found by staff in a dumpster at the site on April 1, according to Lake County Solid Waste Manager Mark Nelson. The caps and connected wires filled a large garbage bag and were removed by the Lake County Office of Emergency Management.

Cemex Construction Materials Florida is again seeking permission from Hernando County to expand its mining operations on 730 acres north of State Road 50 and west of Fort Dade Avenue.

If successful in getting the county to amend its future land use map, it would be one of the biggest mining expansions in years, said Paul Wieczorek, senior planner for the county.

A construction company building a hydroelectric plant (HES) on the Deliçay River in the eastern Erzincan province has dangerously left tons of explosives buried in a pasturearea after the project was suspended by a court decision.

Private sector demand for gold in China is poised to increase by 25% from the current level of 1 100 t/y to at least 1 350 t/y by 2017, the World Gold Council (WGC) said on Tuesday.

Last year saw China become the world’s largest gold market and, although 2014 Chinese gold demand is set for consolidation, the succeeding years are expected to see ongoing strong growth, driven by rising real incomes, a deepening pool of private savings and rapid urbanisation across China.
