The 11 miners trapped in a Chinese gold mine after an explosion blocked entrance to the mine remain in communication with rescue teams on the surface. The miners have been able to communicate via a new telephone line.
 
According to reports from the BBC and local media in China, the miners are in good spirits, are grateful for nutritional liquids and medicine delivered to them via a long thin communication tunnel and have requested some pork sausages.
 
BHP Group Ltd on Wednesday upgraded its full-year iron ore production outlook on sustained China demand and restart of Samarco operations. The company resumed production at its Samarco plant with joint venture partner Vale SA in December, five years after a dam disaster led to suspension of activities at the site and multiple legal cases.

The deadline to submit entries to the photo contest has been extended to Friday, Jan. 22. If you have a knack for photography and some great shots of a recent job, enter the contest and upload your best pictures. Qualifying entries will be displayed through ISEE’s social media channels where anyone can vote.

Dodge Data & Analytics reports that total construction starts lost 5 percent in December, falling to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $784.3 billion. Nonresidential building starts fell 11 percent during the month, while nonbuilding starts were 5 percent lower. Residential starts were essentially flat over the month.
 
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, British Columbia recorded one of its best years in nearly a decade in terms of mineral exploration spending in 2020. It was a year that also saw several acquisitions, the advancement of what promises to be one of the largest gold mining districts in Canada (the Barkerville-Cariboo Gold project), and most mines continuing to operate and keep thousands of workers employed, despite a pandemic.
