Newmont Mining's $10 billion acquisition of Canada's Goldcorp closed Thursday, April 18, giving rise to Newmont Goldcorp Corporation (NYSE: NEM)(TSX: NGT), the world’s largest gold producer by market value, output and reserves.

The mammoth company, to be led by Gary Goldberg until the end of the year, will mine in the Americas, Australia and Ghana, producing between 6 and 7 million ounces of gold annually over the next ten years and beyond.

A federal judge has lifted a seven-year ban on uranium leases in Southwest Colorado after a U.S. mining program was shown to have no harmful effect on four endangered fish species in the Colorado River. The Department of Energy program to mine uranium in the Paradox Valley area was put on hold in 2011, when a court injunction required an additional environmental review on potential impacts to the fish.

As the platinum industry heads for its annual gathering in London, the question is whether one of the worst-performing metals of the last few years can sustain its recent recovery. On May 7, 2019, a miner suffered burns to his body when superheated gases carrying hot, fine, alkaline particles were forcefully expelled through an open process vessel door. The victim was on a platform 5-6 feet above other miners who were setting off a Cardox charge to free a blockage in the vessel. He opened the door around the same time they set off the charge.
