The deadline to submit an abstract for the 45th Annual Conference on Explosives & Blasting Technique has been extended to Wednesday, May 30. This is your chance to share your techniques, strategies and research with your peers and industry leaders at the world’s largest conference on explosives engineering. Check out our website for all the details.

Meet and network with our industry’s key decision makers, sit in on ISEE board of directors meetings and provide input on the direction of the ISEE committees and student chapters. Apply for the 2018-2019 student board of directors seat today.

The position is a one year term that runs concurrently with the presiding ISEE President’s term. To be eligible, applicants must belong to an ISEE student chapter and have approval from their chapter and institution prior to applying.

ISEE moved its home office Monday, May. 7. Although the phone number will remain the same, please be sure to update the mailing address to:

International Society of Explosives Engineers
26500 Renaissance Parkway
Cleveland, Ohio 44128

The move comes after our neighbors Nestle purchased a cluster of buildings and land last year where our offices were located. Our new headquarters will feature a prominent display of historical memorabilia from the mining and explosives industries; a large staging area for conference preparation and packing; and updated infrastructure including internet access, phone lines and IT systems.

Follow us on Facebook to see the pictures once we're all settled in.

Cobalt is a hot commodity and getting hotter. The mineral is in high demand and the largest known deposit of cobalt in our country is located in Fredericktown, Missouri. The old Madison Mines have been dormant since the late 1970s when they stopped mining lead. But now a resurrection is taking place as cobalt takes center stage.

Nuria Menéndez, managing director of Orovalle, Orvana Minerals’ subsidiary in Spain, told local newspaper La Nueva España that the company has plans to reopen the Carlés gold mine, located in the Salas municipality of the Principality of Asturias, northern Spain.

According to the newspaper, Menéndez explained that the mine was put under care and maintenance last year but following some exploratory works, it was determined that reopening the mine would result in benefits for the company.

Explosives have an inherent problem - they should be perfectly safe for handling and storage but detonate reliably on demand. Using computer modeling and a novel molecule design technique, scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory have replaced one "arm" of an explosive molecule to help unravel the first steps in the detonation process and better understand its sensitivity -- how easily it begins a violent reaction.

Students of all ages have the opportunity to experience hands-on learning this summer at Missouri University of Science and Technology. They can learn life skills while honing their team-building skills and what it takes to have a career in science, technology, engineering or math.

Footage released by British Columbia Transportation gives a panoramic view of explosives triggering a controlled avalanche on Morrissey Ridge near Fernie on April 26. BC Transportation said the controlled explosion prompted snow deposits to come within 100 meters of a nearby highway, which was closed at the time.

The safety procedure follows two fatal skiing incidents in the area in January.

About 20 explosions rang out Thursday, April 26 at the DuPont Employee Recreation Club off West Virginia 892, but they were all planned and under control of the FBI.

The federal law enforcement agency teamed with the companies based at the Washington Works site — owner Chemours, along with DuPont and Kuraray — to hold a chemical industry outreach workshop Thursday.

"It’s meant for chemical industry professionals, laboratory (personnel), academia ... fire response services, firemen, hazmat teams and law enforcement," said Special Agent John D. Large, weapons of mass destruction coordinator for the FBI’s Pittsburgh Division.
