Port of Houston Seeks Support for Expansion, Improvement of Houston Ship Channel

The Port of Houston and a coalition of businesses recently launched a website to mobilize supporters and explain the benefits of a project to expand and improve the Houston Ship Channel, noting that such a move would mean greater economic growth and a safer, more efficient waterway.

The Port of Houston noted that it has been working with Congress and the Corps of Engineers since 2010 in planning the next major channel improvements. “During that time, the growth in U.S. energy production, manufacturing, and exports as well as the increasing size of ships are creating significant demand and pressure on the Houston Ship Channel and regional infrastructure, driving the need to make improvements to this nationally significant waterway.”

The port said that dredging for critical improvements must begin in 2021, and it urged stakeholders that rely on the key waterway to learn more and to register their support on the website.
