ILTA’s Gasoline Distribution Working Group continues to prepare for a proposed rule on emissions of Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAP) expected to be released by EPA by June 1, 2022. In its outreach to EPA officials, it became clear that it would be useful to arrange an educational site visit for the officials charged with developing the rule. Unfortunately, travel restrictions still in place due to the pandemic prevented a physical tour. ILTA is tremendously grateful to Marathon Petroleum for devising an innovative solution — a virtual tour. On March 2, Marathon personnel conducted a “smart helmet” tour while EPA and other working group members joined virtually.

The RealWear Smart Helmet is a hard hat with a camera that snaps into the hat and enables real-time video communication with remote users. The technology had previously been used for trouble-shooting, training, collaboration and more.

The tour took place at a facility in Lansing, Michigan, and demonstrated truck loading operations, vapor recovery unit, and equipment used for monitoring of emissions. The virtual tour allowed EPA officials to ask questions and receive answers in real time. ILTA thanks the personnel from Marathon and their contractors that made the tour possible, including Judson McCulloch, Kevin Snyder, Mike Gray, Jon Wills, Faith Taylor, Allison LeBrun and Sue Barto, Chad Christensen, and Larry Bermudez.
