ILTA released the results of it 2019 Terminal Employee Safety Survey in mid-December. Fifty-two companies participated in this year’s survey. Companies that participated in the survey received copies of the full report, which is not available to nonparticipants. ILTA will be putting out a call for the 2020 survey in January, and it looks forward to additional member companies participating. This is an incredible opportunity for terminal members to benchmark their safety performance against their industry peers. Everyone should participate.

In 2018, the most recent year for which data is available, the average terminal industry total recordable incident rate (TRIR) was 1.54 per 100 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers. The average days away from work, job transfer or restriction rate was 0.81 per 100 workers. While there was a slight increase in TRIR compared with the 2018 survey results (reflecting 2017 performance), the 2018 TRIR for terminal employees compares favorably to the private industry incident rate of 2.8 per 100 FTE and the Warehousing and Storage rate of 5.1 per 100 FTE. These results are displayed in the figure below:

ILTA uses the survey data to evaluate participants for its Terminal Safety Recognition Program. In 2019, 21 companies received the ILTA Safety Excellence Award for a TRIR in 2018 at or below 0.75 per 100 FTE. Two companies, Energy Transfer and Motiva Enterprises were recognized for sustained safety excellence over five consecutive years. Marathon Petroleum Company and Motiva Enterprises received the ILTA Platinum Safety Award. In order to be considered for the platinum award a company must meet a TRIR of 0.50 or less per 100 FTE, have an active contractor safety management program, if it uses contractor labor, and submit an application describing its safety program and performance. Winners are selected by a panel of ILTA member peers based on their safety programs and performance.
