IIE is issuing a call for nominations from U.S. colleges and universities that currently have students from the Philippines enrolled on their campuses who have emergency needs for funds due to of the financial situation in their home country caused by typhoon Haiyan. Philippines-ESF will provide grants of $3,000 each to selected Filipino students nominated by their U.S. host colleges and universities. Priority will be given to undergraduates and to those with the most urgent financial need and those closest to graduation.

Allan E. Goodman, president and CEO of the IIE, said, "Our goal is to help relieve the financial burden that is compounding these students' personal distress, and to encourage them to complete their U.S. studies so they can return home with the skills and new knowledge to help rebuild their shattered communities."

International Student Advisers or other campus officials should complete the Philippines-ESF nomination form and e-mail it to ESF@iie.org by December 4, 2013. Awards will be announced in mid-December. Applications directly from students will NOT be accepted. U.S. host campuses nominating students for Philippines-ESF awards are expected to provide some emergency assistance to the nominated students, through tuition waivers, full or partial scholarships, housing, stipends, loans, work study, or other forms of support.

IIE’s Emergency Student Fund provides grants to post-secondary students matriculated at accredited educational institutions outside their home countries whose sources of support have been impacted by natural disaster or other crises. Since 2010, IIE’s ESF has provided over $1 million to more than 400 students from Syria, Iran, Japan, Haiti, Libya, and Thailand whose home sources of financial support were impacted by crisis or natural disaster.

The Fulbright Visiting Scholar Programs for Iraq and Libya are designed to bring junior scholars to U.S. host institutions for faculty development, mentoring, and cultural exchange activities. The intent of the ten-week programs is to equip scholars with the knowledge and tools needed to build the capacity of universities in Iraq and Libya and to advance the education of future generations. In addition, these programs lay the foundation for Iraqi and Libyan scholars and their U.S. hosts to develop long-term institutional relationships and to identify areas of cooperation that can be sustained beyond the grant period.

Through this request for proposal, IIE’s Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) seeks institutions to implement ten-week summer programs scheduled to be held from June 29, 2014 to September 6, 2014. Approximately five to nine scholars will be placed in discipline-based cohorts at each of the selected U.S. host institutions. U.S. host institutions are to submit a proposal to host scholars in one of the following disciplines:

  • American Literature
  • Engineering
  • Science and Technology
  • TEFL/Linguistics
  • Business
  • Engineering
  • Information Technology
  • TEFL/Linguistics
The Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program for Libya also includes a four-week intensive English language workshop that we invite you to host. Participating institutions will enjoy a unique opportunity to establish lasting relationships with faculty members at universities in Iraq and to build upon current efforts to internationalize their campuses and surrounding communities.

The Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program for Libya is funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA). The Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program for Iraq is funded by the U.S. Embassy Baghdad, Iraq and supported by ECA. These programs are administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), a division of the Institute of International Education (IIE).

For more details regarding these programs and instructions on how to submit a proposal, please visit the CIES website at www.cies.org/Fulbright/Libya and www.cies.org/Fulbright/Iraq/.

Created in 2012 in partnership with Jusoor, the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), and the U.S. State Department’s EducationUSA-Syria advising office, the IIE Syria Consortium for Higher Education in Crisis convened nearly 40 universities las
t year to commit scholarships for threatened Syrian students.

IIE is pleased to report on the Consortium’s results in year one – 70 Syrian students arriving at 13 US university campuses this Fall, with scholarships worth over $2.3 million. With the crisis in Syria showing no signs of abating, it is clear that ongoing support is needed for Syrian students and scholars to continue their education and academic work.

For the second year of the Consortium, the Institute is now actively seeking current Consortium members to renew or expand scholarships, as well as additional universities to join the Consortium and offer scholarships for 2014.

All Consortium members will be eligible to apply for top-up grants of $5,000 - $10,000. In addition, in an effort to streamline and simplify the scholarship process, IIE and EducationUSA-Syria will provide basic pre-screening of Syrian student candidates.
