Two years ago, a block of low-income houses in the West Central neighborhood was filled with tenants who couldn’t afford Spokane’s increasing rent. Today, it’s a mostly empty patch of dirt and machinery, where a few houses on stilts remain. The tenants are long gone.

You probably don't need a reminder of how much bad hires can hurt – but here's one anyway: Some research suggests that each bad hire leaves employers with a monetized loss of over $50,000 in productivity. It's also been estimated that replacing bad hires – especially those with specialized skills – can cost companies several times workers' annual salaries.

Arguably, the first-level manager is ground zero for both engagement and results. It is here that individual contributors-turned-managers prove their mettle, cutting their teeth on all things managerial and positioning themselves for success in the organization. Email campaigns and social ads can help you move the needle and attract new customers online. But for many small companies, digital advertising will never fully replace the value of word-of-mouth marketing – or good old-fashioned face time. In fact, a simple thank-you card or a friendly offline introduction can lead to new business opportunities you didn't know were on the table. The best part? If a current customer is the one recommending your services, there's an element of trust already in place.

How can you capitalize on this preference, and more effectively market your retail store to local customers in a way that appeals to their natural preference for shopping local? Here’s what the report had to say.
