Roy Lee Wakefield passed away on Wednesday, July 15, surrounded by family.
 
Roy was born in Eufaula, Oklahoma and graduated from Childress High School in 1957 in Arkansas. He attended the University of Tennessee in Memphis, where he met his wife, Patricia Atkins. Roy and Patricia married June 25, 1960.
 
Roy and his wife Patricia moved to Houston in the 60s where Roy worked for Mr. Pride Car Wash, owned by United Inns Incorporated, where he worked his way up to oversee operations in the Houston, Memphis, and Atlanta markets. He later partnered with Nelson Rusche in the mid-70s to become the Operating Partner of Mister Car Wash in Houston, TX. Together they expanded to over 15 car washes in and around the Houston area before the company sold in 1997. Roy also served on the board of Waterway Car Wash based out of St. Louis, Missouri.

Brown Bear Car Wash turns 63 on August 27, and will celebrate by offering free “Beary Clean” car washes to customers at 27 tunnel wash locations. The Seattle-based, family-owned company has provided over 443,000 free “Beary Clean” washes over the past 13 years to celebrate its August “birthday” and to honor former and current service members on Veterans Day.

The Wash Tub in Texas is offering a free full-service car wash to all school faculty members from Aug. 1-8. The full-service car wash will include a complete interior vacuum, soft cloth wash, towel dry, complete wipe-down of dash and console and all windows cleaned inside and out.

One unexpected result of COVID-19 shutdowns and closures is fewer coins in circulation, which has equated to some car washes being impacted. Some are contemplating switching to tokens, though there are some initial costs involved.
