The second year of the Executive Management Institute is now accepting applications. Taught by executive education faculty, this immersive week of strategic business, financial, and leadership training connects an intimate group of car washers as they build a life-long network of like-minded professionals. All participants receive an official certificate from the University of Notre Dame upon completion.

The ever-evolving world of unlimited clubs has changed dramatically over the last several years. It wasn’t long ago that unlimited clubs were looked down upon, and now, if you don’t have one you are losing business. New technology is changing the way we administer these clubs, and with that we have seen a rise in member numbers. Gone are the days of 200-300 members. Today, sites have over 6,000 members and the administrative tasks have multiplied, as well. Operators now have a choice between RFID technology or License Plate Recognition (LPR), and don’t forget about the app.

Uber has unveiled plans for a flying taxi The ride-sharing company showed off a full-size mock-up of the electric plane concept vehicle at the Consumer Elecronics Show in Las Vegas. The mockup was created with South Korean carmaker Hyundai. Uber wants to offer aerial ridesharing, allowing a pilot and three passengers to take city trips of up to 60 miles at a speed of up to 180 mph.

Modern cars roll out of factories packed with cellular connections, powerful processors and a growing suite of sensors, including cameras, radar and microphones. That's turning them into the next information goldmine, rivaling the data-creating capabilities of smartphones. To capitalize on this, Amazon.com Inc., Intel Corp., Qualcomm Inc. and BlackBerry Ltd. are pitching data-crunching services and partnerships to an auto industry searching for new revenue streams and business models.

Jack Anthony Industries, which operates 13 car washes, is building two more car washes in California – one in Vallejo and the other in Fairfield. The CEO of Jack Anthony Industries, Jason Anthony, is also president of the Western Car Wash Association.

A new location of Ocean Car Wash opened in December in Houston, Texas. The business offers full-service car washes and interior detailing as well as express wash packages and 16 vacuum lanes for customers to use for free self-vacuums.

New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced the end of subminimum wage across miscellaneous industries statewide, which includes car wash workers. The order impacts over 70,000 tipped employees. The elimination of the tip wage for miscellaneous industries will be phased in over a one-year period.

A plan to open a combination car wash and gas station with multiple accessory uses, including a dog-washing operation, cleared an initial hurdle at the December Middletown Planning Board meeting. This car wash and dog-washing option combined with food service and a gas station would be the first of its kind in Middletown, N.Y. Eric Petzold, owner of Exit Strategy, purchased the properties in 2018 and is seeking this special-use permit.
