In April 2011, Citizenship and Immigration Canada set a 4-year maximum for work permits issued to certain temporary foreign workers (employees who are neither Canadian citizens nor Canadian permanent residents). Known as the "cumulative duration" test, this 4-year maximum will come into effect in April 2015. Employers should consider the "cumulative duration" test when hiring temporary foreign workers from this point onward to ensure that the temporary foreign worker can work for the full duration needed.
