At least seven lawsuits have been filed over the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's final rule reducing allowable exposure levels for silica dust. The rule is set to take effect June 23, 2017, for the construction industry and a year later for other industries. OSHA notified the panel on April 11 that "seven petitions for review of the same final agency action" were filed in six courts of appeals within 10 days after the action was issued, according to a case document. One of the petitions was file by AGC of America. "Administration officials appear to have instead opted to set a new standard that is well beyond the capabilities of current air filtration and dust removal technologies," said Stephen Sandherr, AGC of America CEO. Anaheim-Santa Ana-Irvine and Monroe, Mich. Top Growth List; Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas, and Bloomington, Ill. Have Largest Declines; Many Energy-Producing Metro Areas Experience Big Losses
Construction employment increased in 234 out of 358 metro areas, was unchanged in 52 and declined in 72 between February 2015 and February 2016, according to a new analysis of federal employment data released by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials noted that many energy-producing areas experienced job losses during the past year.

On March 31, 2016, Rice University and JE Dunn Construction Company broke ground on the highly anticipated new Parking Garage and Office Annex project. The new six-story, 66,710 square-foot facility will house up to 295 work spaces. The east side of the building will be connected to a new seven-level parking garage with 450+ parking spaces. The building will feature terra-cotta fins that control the amount of natural light into the offices, while the parking garage will be disguised with leaf images displayed on large plastic scrims attached to the sides of the garage. Located near Rice’s Entrance 3, the new facility is scheduled to be completed summer 2017. With a projected 0.7% first-quarter gross domestic product rate expected to be reported this week, few believe the Federal Reserve policymakers will increase interest rates this month. Some experts are debating whether the Federal Open Market Committee will hint in its statement this week that an interest rate increase is coming in June. Los Angeles-based Daqri is developing a virtual helmet for use in construction and other industries. The helmet's sensors and cameras are designed to make the construction industry safer and more productive. Autodesk, Hyperloop and Siemens have already placed orders for the helmet.
