AGC News
On September 28, AGC of America reported that construction employment declined in 153 out of 358 metro
areas between August 2014 and August 2015, nearly matching the 163 areas that
added construction jobs. Association officials noted that the number
of metro areas losing construction jobs is on the rise amid growing uncertainty
about federal funding for construction programs and growing shortages of
qualified construction workers.

"The fact that fewer than half of metro areas added
construction jobs at a time when there were gains in nearly three-fourths of
the states suggests that contractors in many more metros would be hiring if they
could find qualified workers," said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief
economist. "In addition, the steep downturn in oil and gas drilling has hit
construction hard in cities such as Fort Worth, Houston and New Orleans, even
as downstream projects gain steam in places such as Beaumont-Port Arthur, Texas"

It's the talk of the town: the Alley Theatre has reopened its doors after nearly $47M in renovations—the first time in 47 years since it opened. Studio Red's Pete Ed Garret lead the design, which was built by W. S. Bellows Construction Corp. (Bellows also constructed the original building which opened in 1968 at 615 Texas Ave.). The construction work began in July 2014, and changes were made to nearly all aspects of the theater including new seating in the Hubbard theater (which has doubled in size), new central air/heating for the building, expansion of backstage areas and relocation of the stage to create a more intimate atmosphere.
From the time construction began, over 5,000 tons of concrete and over 150 tons of metal have been demolished and recycled. The three-phase project is funded by the Alley Theatre's $73M Extended Engagement Capital Campaign, which plans to begin the $16.5M final phase for endowment and savings later this year. The theater held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, September 26. Congratulation W. S. Bellows Construction Corp! The Hubbard Theatre will open to the public on October 2, 2015 with One Man, Two Guvnors.

Thursday, September 24 was a momentous time for crews working on the Marriott Marquis Hotel across from the George R. Brown Convention Center as they watched a palm tree be lifted to the summit of the 30-story structure. Developed by Rida Development, the project was designed by Morris Architects and is being constructed by Balfour Beatty Construction and Welbro Building Corp. The property broke ground April 11, 2014 and is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2016. Among its amenities, the hotel will feature 1,000 guest rooms and over 100,000 square feet of meeting space, including Houston’s largest ballroom. The Marquis will feature a one-of-a-kind Texas shaped lazy river and infinity pool, along with a special events pavilion all overlooking Discovery Green Park. The Marriott Marquis will join the Hilton-Americas Houston near the convention center. City officials and business leaders hope the two hotels, with a total of 2,200 rooms, will attract the top-notch conferences that are believed now to shun Houston because of its shortage of rooms nearby.

Many businesses around the globe are underinsured and unprepared for a number of emerging risks, states Willis Group CEO Dominic Casserley. "There's a long way to go not only in building up more resilient companies, which have more insurance," he says, "but, actually, in the middle of that, conducting advisory and brokerage activities to help them navigate a complex world."

The increase in burdensome endorsements that limit coverage for construction defects is causing commercial general liability coverage for defects found under the statutory period to come up short. Contractors pulled into litigation years after jobs are completed also face the problem that most CGL policies use the same pool of money to insure all of a contractor's projects.

The green building movement is growing. In Texas alone, almost 1.26 million jobs in the green building sector are projected between 2015 and 2018, according to the study.

Construction jobs for green building—projected to account for 2.3 million jobs this year—are outpacing overall construction growth in the U.S., according to a recent U.S. Green Building Council study.

The green jobs represent more than one-third construction sector jobs overall. The 2015 Green Building Economic Impact Study, prepared by Booz Allen Hamilton, finds the green building industry contributes more than $134.3 billion in labor income to Americans. Green construction will account for more than 3.3 million jobs by 2018 and generate $190.3 billion in labor earnings.
