Sept. 22 is National Voter Registration Day. 

National Voter Registration Day is a nonpartisan civic holiday celebrating our democracy, according to the official website for the observance. The event website says nearly 3 million voters have registered to vote on the holiday to date.

The Tower of Voices – Flight 93 Memorial, a tribute to those who died when the plane crashed during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, received the 2020 Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute's (PCI) Building Information Modeling (BIM) Design Award. The 93-foot-tall tower will house 40 custom-made aluminum wind chimes, one for each of the passengers and crew who died that day. Each chime is cast to produce a distinct musical note, so that together they create a set of 40 “voices."

All month, mental health advocates, prevention organizations, survivors, allies, and community members unite to promote suicide prevention awareness. National Suicide Prevention Week is the Monday through Sunday surrounding World Suicide Prevention Day. 

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), construction occupations have the highest rate of suicide, as well as the highest number of suicides across all occupational groups.

Pandemic lockdowns have been tough on the construction industry but have been especially difficult for minority-owned firms, which already face challenges. "Now we're in a space where there are, one, fewer opportunities, and two, a more desperate and dire need for access to working capital," which has always been more elusive for minority-owned firms, says Kenneth Thomas, co-founder of the Minority & Women Contractors & Developers Association.

The coronavirus has harmed the construction industry, prompting project delays and cancellations, layoffs and furloughs, yet it remains difficult for a majority of firms to find craft workers to hire, according to the results of a workforce survey conducted by AGC of America and Autodesk.

On Sept. 9, AGC helped lead an ad hoc coalition of 88 national trade associations and labor unions in calling on Congressional leaders to take action on three priorities: (1) a turn-key, one-year extension of the current surface transportation law—the FAST Act—with increased investment levels; (2) emergency federal funding for state departments of transportation and public transit agencies—$37 billion and $32 billion, respectively; and (3) provisions to ensure solvency of the Highway Trust Fund for the duration of the extension at a minimum.

AGC of America launched a nationwide program  esigned to help expand the diversity of the industry by making job sites more inclusive. Called Culture of CARE (commit, attract, retain and empower), it is designed to help firms create more welcoming workplace environments for staff, particularly those from diverse demographic backgrounds.  
 

In addition to the new program, the association has already released its Business Case for Diversity & Inclusion in the Construction Industry, which provides the economic, safety and productivity rationale for expanding construction diversity.

Employers should have an emergency plan in place that specifies what to do if a worker has signs of heat-related illness, and ensures that medical services are available if needed.

OSHA's Occupational Exposure to Heat page explains what employers can do to keep workers safe and what workers need to know - including factors for heat illness, adapting to working in indoor and outdoor heat, protecting workers, recognizing symptoms, and first aid training.

As areas around the country hit triple-digit heat index temperatures, construction firms are reporting challenges in keeping their employees safe from heat-related illness, especially while workers must wear face masks to prevent coronavirus spread. Construction companies have regularly held toolbox talks on dealing with the heat and watching for signs of heat-related illness, but with masks being required and adding to the heat dangers, those talks are coming more frequently.
