FMI's national survey finds 89 percent of participants report talent shortages and 75 percent are investing in people programs to develop and retain people. One of the key findings is that most respondents are not identifying and developing high-potential employees—a missed opportunity to push young people into leadership roles and create a sustainable leadership pipeline.

On November 2, 2017, AGC of America CEO Stephen Sandherr released a statement regarding the Congressional proposal to reform the federal tax code:

"The tax proposal released today provides a much-needed framework that will provoke important debate about the best way to improve the tax environment for employers and workers. As Congress and the Trump administration work to further refine today’s proposal, we will continue our vigorous advocacy work to ensure the measure benefits construction employers of all types and sizes.  In particular, we will work to ensure that pass-through businesses, including the majority of construction firms, also benefit from tax reform. Any failure to address pass-through businesses in the final plan would mean many construction firms would not benefit."

Hurricane Recovery Work May Have Boosted Employment Levels Slightly, But Overall Conditions Remain Strong for Construction Sector Even As Employers Work to Address Growing Labor Shortages

Construction employment increased by 11,000 jobs in October to the highest level in nine years, while the industry’s unemployment rate fell to 4.5 percent, the lowest October rate since 2006, according to an analysis of new government data by AGC of America. Association officials said that while hurricane recovery work may have helped boost employment in the sector, most of the gains are occurring because of strong demand for many types of private-sector projects across much of the country.

Hurricane Harvey Related News

In response to the recent storm devastation along the Texas Gulf Coast and on the island of Puerto Rico, the Houston Chapter of the Associated General Contractors recently announced its decision to donate $100,000 to the relief efforts of Hurricanes Harvey and Maria.

"In the days and weeks following Hurricane Harvey, we heard many stories from a number of our member companies about the devastation that many of their employees endured, and in many cases are still struggling to overcome," stated AGC Houston President/CEO Jerry Nevlud. "I am really proud of how our board of directors was willing to step up to support our workforce."

To that end, AGC Houston joined forces with AGC of America, which set up a call for funds through AGC Charities, encouraging companies to donate and for individuals to apply for financial help. The $100,000 pledge will be divided equally between the two hurricane relief efforts. Donations and applications are being accepted through November 21, 2017.

When did Veterans Day start and why is it on November 11?

Veterans Day began in 1919 as Armistice Day, marking the date when Germany and the allies signed a 1918 agreement to cease World War I hostilities. Earlier in 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day, saying: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory."
