On Wednesday, February 18, Leadership AGC participants headed to the Texas Medical Center headquarters for an extraordinary opportunity to meet and hear from six key individuals who represent the innovations and collaborations taking place in the world’s largest medical complex.

The Leadership AGC participants – along with facilitator Jason Kopke, Marek Sawing and Drilling – arrived early at the Trevisio Board Room, located atop the John P. McGovern Texas Medical Center Commons Building. The space offered a spectacular backdrop of the TMC’s buildings as the group heard from Shawn Cloonan, Texas Medical Center, who served as moderator; Steve Swinson, Thermal Energy Corporation (TECO); Cynthia Walston, FKP Architects; Janet Sisolak, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center; and Patrick J. Kiley, Kiley Advisors about the chapter’s long-time history with the medical center since it opened in 1945 and the ongoing research, education, construction management and development of the eighth-largest business district in the country.

After the panel discussion, the group headed to a shuttle bus for a tour of the 1,345-acre district led by Edwin Friedrichs and Jacob Gonzalez of Walter P Moore who discussed their involvement in the medical center’s parking and traffic engineering systems and projects. The nine-month leadership training program kicked off in September 2014 with 16 professionals earmarked by their companies as promising future leaders. The group will be headed to Austin next as part of the AGC Legislative Day on March 12.

For many trades, the complexity of the workforce shortage issue is the challenge. This includes lack of craft and safety training, misclassification of craft workers as subcontractors thereby avoiding payment of overtime and payroll taxes such as social security, and not providing employee benefits or workers’ compensation insurance coverage—often in the pursuit of low bid and covered up by a seeming limitless supply of undocumented workers who labor in the shadows, which depresses wages.
This is why C3 needs the leadership and support of a critical mass of organizations in the A/E/C industry in order overcome it. We all must recognize that there is no quick resolution to a workforce problem that has been compounding itself for more than 30 years. Click here to learn more about C3.
