AGC Houston Marks 100 Years: Centennial Celebration & 2024 Annual Meeting Highlights

Celebrating a century of excellence! On February 1st, more than 300 AGC Houston members gathered at the Bell Tower on 34th Street to close out our centennial celebration with a bang! Since our establishment in 1923, our association has been focused on bringing people together to advance the issues important to the commercial construction industry.

At the event, we presented the Standard of Excellence award to Joseph Khaled of McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. Established in 1998, this prestigious award gives special recognition to an outstanding construction industry employee who exemplifies the highest standards of excellence. The award criteria are based on commitment to teamwork, professionalism, leadership, creativity, innovation, customer and community service, and passion for the industry.

In addition, we presented the William H. Scott III Volunteer of the Year Award to Jeff Taggart of Orion (Formerly TAS Concrete Construction, LLC). In honor of the AGC’s only two-time Board Chair and longtime member volunteer, the William H. Scott III Volunteer of the Year Award recognizes a member who has gone above and beyond to support the chapter and industry.

Lastly, we honored the Leadership AGC class of 2023 and celebrated with our members! AGC Houston would not be what it is without our members, and we're grateful for each and every one of you. Thank you to everyone who attended and sponsored this very special event! Let's continue to bring people together to support the issues important to the commercial construction industry.

ACE Mentor Houston is the local affiliate of the national ACE organization and is a collaborative effort to bring the multifaceted construction industry, educational institutions, and local community together to expose high school students to the world of architecture, construction, engineering, and building trades. In this after-school mentoring program, student teams work directly with professionals from the A/E/C industry to design hypothetical projects, tour local construction sites, and visit architectural, engineering, and construction offices. The program runs from October to April and is operating with a hybrid program this year with virtual weekly mentor sessions and in-person activities to include site visits, building activities, and architectural walking tours.

For students, it is a unique chance to discover and develop new skills, solidify goals, and get on track toward exciting and rewarding careers. In addition, many students form positive relationships with industry professionals who can provide important references for obtaining college admissions, scholarships, internships, and full‐time employment.

For professionals, ACE provides an opportunity to give back to the community while developing the next generation in the building industry and networking with other professionals who share the same passions.  If you would like to get involved in ACE as a mentor, student, industry partner, or committee member, please contact us (https://www.acementorhouston.org/). If you have the passion, there is a role for you, no matter your time commitment, availability, or skill set.
