Remembering Jerilyn Haynes

With heavy hearts, we share the news of the profound loss of a cherished member of our AGC Houston family, Jerilyn Louise Haynes. She peacefully departed this world at the age of 76 on August 11, 2023, in Tomball, Texas.

Jeri was an esteemed member of our AGC Houston family. She devoted over four decades to our organization, imprinting her legacy before gracefully retiring in 2010. As an integral part of our history, she not only contributed as a dedicated employee but also as a chapter historian. Her passion for our mission was matched only by her warmth and kindness, making her a beloved figure among colleagues. As we mourn her passing, let's also celebrate the remarkable woman she was.

Construction workers, who often work outdoors in direct sunlight or in hot, enclosed spaces, are at risk for heat-related illnesses and, in severe cases, death. Rising global temperatures in recent decades increase that risk. However, these illnesses and deaths are preventable.

The resources below are organized by topic and contain information about heat hazards in construction and ways to prevent related illnesses. The sections correspond to the following new checklists from the CPWR-OSHA Alliance:

Overall Heat-Illness Prevention Program Checklist for Construction
Daily Heat-Illness Prevention Checklist for Construction

Prevention Strategies:

  • Water, Rest and Shade: Encourage workers to drink plenty of water, take regular breaks in shaded areas and provide adequate shade on construction sites.
  • Training: Educate workers and supervisors about the signs, symptoms and prevention of heat-related illnesses.
  • Work Schedules: Adjust work schedules to avoid the hottest part of the day, if possible.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Provide lightweight, breathable clothing and encourage the use of sunscreen, wide-brimmed hats and cooling vests.
  • Monitoring: Implement a buddy system or regular checks to monitor workers for signs of heat-related illnesses.
  • Emergency Response: Establish an emergency plan and ensure that workers know how to respond to a heat-related emergency

News you can Use

2023 Autodesk and AGC of America Workforce Survey

AGC of America is seeking to understand the current state of the construction labor market and also gauge how supply chain problems and materials price spikes are impacting your firms and the industry. We also want to understand how these and other recent economic developments are impacting your operations. Your answers will better equip us to advocate for measures to help the industry’s labor needs in both the short and long term.

That is why we are asking you to take a few minutes to complete the following workforce survey that we and our partners at Autodesk have prepared: 2023 Autodesk and AGC of America Workforce Survey (surveymonkey.com)

Your responses will be kept confidential; only aggregated results will be reported. The results will help us better outline the current situation to elected and appointed officials, the media, educators and your peers within the business community. The more people understand the scope — and consequences — of current construction labor market and supply chain conditions, the more likely they are to enact measures to support the industry. We hope you, as well, will find the results useful in comparing your situation and expectations to those of your peers.

Thank you in advance for your time and support. And please do not hesitate to contact Brian Turmail, our vice president for public affairs and strategic initiatives, with any questions or comments about the survey. He can be reached at (703) 459-0238 or brian.turmail@agc.org.
