AGC Houston Hosts Annual Chapter Meeting

On February 1, 2023, more than 260 AGC Houston members gathered at the Junior League of Houston for our Annual Chapter Meeting.

Those who attended the meeting got to hear from Steve Sandherr, President of Associated General Contractors of America, on what AGC of America is doing at a national level and provided a political and economic lookahead from the national perspective. In addition to this, he explained the advocacy issues AGC of America is dealing with and how they're working to overcome them.

Members also got to hear from Corbin Van Arsdale, President of Texas Building Branch, who spoke of the upcoming Texas legislative session, gave a recap of the past Texas elections and explained how this could impact the session, and encouraged members to attend AGC-TBB Legislative Day (March 8th).

At the event, the Standard of Excellence award was presented to John Morvant of Tellepsen. Established in 1998, this prestigious award gives special recognition to an outstanding construction industry employee who exemplifies the highest standards of excellence. The award criteria is based on commitment to teamwork, professionalism, leadership, creativity and innovation, customer and community service, and passion for the industry.

In addition, the William H. Scott III Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Tara Kirkland of Ashton Sawing & Drilling, LLC. In honor of the AGC’s only two-time Board Chair, and longtime member volunteer, the William H. Scott III Volunteer of the Year Award recognizes a member who has gone above and beyond to help support the chapter and industry.

Thank you to everyone who attended and sponsored the event. We look forward to a great year with our members!

The Fundamentals of Building Trades - Fireproofing, Firestopping and Building Thermal course is the first in a four part series of the AGC Houston Fundamentals of Building Trades program. This in person program led by John Ryder of Marek Brothers Systems, Inc., is designed to provide a general overview of fire safety and building code requirements in commercial buildings.

Course Objectives:
One of the more difficult scopes to interpret from plans and specifications is the fireproofing. An even more difficult task is to ensure that the proper scope is bought out so that changes with cost impact are minimized, allowing for the work to proceed in accordance with the project schedule. The intent of this course is to assist the attendees in gaining a better understanding of the current building code requirements and present practical knowledge that will help get this scope of work done properly on time and in budget.

Target Audience:
Ideal candidates for this course include staff new to the construction industry; or management, supervisory, or estimating staff seeking additional knowledge of life and building safety in the commercial construction building sector.

in Place?

Start the new year off right with CPR Training. CPR – or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation – is an emergency lifesaving procedure performed when the heart stops beating. Immediate CPR can double or triple chances of survival after cardiac arrest. Be ready and train your employees to learn critical information that could help save a life.

  • There are about 10,000 cardiac arrests in the workplace each year in the United States, according to a report from the US Occupational Safety & Health Administration.
  • Did you know: only 50% of people can locate an automated external defibrillator (AED) at work?
  • With 10,000 cardiac arrests annually in the workplace, knowing this small piece of information has the potential to save thousands of lives.
