President's Message

Thomas Jefferson, a Founding Father of the United States of America, once wrote, "I consider trial by jury as the only anchor ever yet imagined by man, by which a government can be held to the principles of its constitution." The constitution that he references, of course, is the U.S. Constitution, which was signed on this date exactly 228 years ago.

However, the history of a jury trial of one's peers can be traced all the way back to the middle ages. In fact, jury trials were a cornerstone of the Magna Carta, which became one of the first official documents to place strict limitations on the power of the government over the individual and provided that man be governed by the "lawful judgment of his peers." This proved to be a valuable tool for the English to resist a powerful central government.

Back by popular demand, GTLA is proud to announce that the Political & Legislative Summit will be returning this year on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at the State Bar of Georgia. A half-day workshop that is focused on engaging our membership in the legislative process, the Political & Legislative Summit will give you the opportunity to hear from some of our state's leading legislative and media minds, including Speaker David Ralston, Senate Majority Leader Bill Coswert, House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams and many more! And, learn from our first-class lobbying team in intimate breakout sessions and help GTLA to craft legislative strategies that we will use in the 2016 Legislative Session.

This is a can't-miss Summit for any GTLA member who wants to get involved -- or stay involved -- in our efforts to protect and uphold the Constitutional Right to Trial by Jury at the Capitol and around the state. We hope to see you there!

Legislative News

Last week, your GTLA Executive Committee traveled to Washington, D.C. to join our friends at the American Association for Justice for a 'D.C. Fly-In' lobbying trip. In addition to the opportunity join AAJ CEO Linda Lipsen and their top-notch government affairs team for a legislative briefing, our Association's leadership spent two days on Capitol Hill meeting with members of Congress from the Peach State and advocating on behalf of the rights of your clients and your practices.

While on Capitol Hill, we also had the chance to take a private midnight tour of the U.S. Capitol with Congressman Doug Collins, host a legislative reception for our delegation and enjoy the camaraderie of many like-minded individuals who are fighting so hard for our Constitutional rights in Washington.
