In a landmark judgment to combat climate crisis, California mandated that more than half of all the trucks and vans sold in the state should be emission-free by 2035. One of the leading economies in the world, California has always been steadfast in pursuing policies to tackle global warming and come up with some of the most aggressive climate policies. It is again leading the nation in the fight to become carbon neutral by issuing the order that all new trucks sold in the state should be zero emissions by 2045.

Defense One
Lockheed Martin, the world’s largest defense contractor, says it has hired more than 8.300 employees since March, when coronavirus began shutting down business across the United States. The numbers are in stark contrast to the rest of the U.S. economy, which has seen tens of millions of jobs disappear over the past four months. Lockheed said it plans to hire a total of 12,000 employees this year.

3D Printing Industry
EOS, the global leader in LB-PBF systems, has expanded its offering of AM materials with the release of eight new metal powders and processes for use with its M 290, M 300-4, and M 400-4 3D printing systems. The aim of the TRL system is to aid with customer orientation, providing a standardized, data-backed metric for manufacturers to safely cross the border to serial AM production.

Drone Life
A scene depicting dozens of autonomous drones shifting shape while in midflight isn’t from a trailer of the Transformers sequel. It’s a soon-to-be reality for the U.S. Army. Researchers with the U.S. Army’s Combat Capabilities Development Command’s Army Research Laboratory and Texas A&M University recently presented findings from a two-year study at the AIAA Aviation Forum and Exposition’s virtual event.

The Direct Gear Design method optimizes various parameters and elements of gear tooth geometry to achieve the required gear-drive performance. One such critical element of the tooth profile is the root fillet.

Ford announced that it has received government backing, along with its partners, to introduce 5G networks to its car manufacturing.

Segway, which boldly claimed its two-wheeled personal transporter would revolutionize the way people get around, is ending production of its namesake vehicle. The Segway PT, popular with tourists and police officers, will be retired on July 15.

Metal AM

Electrive
Ford presented the new edition of its U.S. custom F-150, which is now being offered with a full hybrid drive for the first time. Interested parties will have to wait up to two years for the electric version of the pickup, however.

Inside EVs
Zero Motorcycles and Vancouver, BC-based Exro Technologies, which works on how to improve electric motors in various applications (including EVs), have announced a development partnership. Exro’s patented Dynamic Power Management (DPM) is a software system, which controls electric motor coils (in the stator) in a more complex way than the standard three-phase approach. 

Electrive
The U.S. company Hyliion, which specializes in electrified drives for heavy-duty commercial vehicles, has presented its Hypertruck Electric Range Extender (ERX). This is an electric drive combined with a natural gas-powered generator to charge the battery. The Hypertruck ERX is a class 8 truck, i.e. with a weight of more than 14.969 tons. The long-haul, fully electric powertrain is to be designed for a range of more than 1,000 miles. While the Hypertruck ERX is powered exclusively by electric motors, the truck is by no means purely electric for the 1,000 miles, as the range extender relies on natural gas.
