IndustryWeek The theme for Manufacturing Day 2018 is "Open Doors, Open Minds." Enticing top talent to the field is the annual goal of this event which continues to grow. Last year events attracted 225,000 students who said the exposure improved their attitudes toward this career. New this year is the Smart Manufacturing app and comic book which showcases how augmented reality, IoT, and additive manufacturing are transforming manufacturing.

Manufacturing.net What cloud vendors often call "the edge" is in reality the center of your universe and your customer’s operations. If you can obtain a clear view into the state of your equipment each moment, as well as details about the environments in which they operate, there is tremendous opportunity for optimizing productivity, reducing costs and increasing revenue.

Tech Xplore Researchers at Ecole Centrale de Lyon have recently devised a new developmental framework inspired by the long-term memory and reasoning mechanisms of humans. This framework, outlined in a paper presented at IEEE ICDL-Epirob in Tokyo and pre-published on arXiv, allows robots to autonomously optimize hyper-parameters tuned from any action and/or vision module, which are treated as a black box.

Design News Now, scientists in China have developed a novel ink that takes ceramics into this 4D printing realm for the first time, paving the way for new structural applications of the material — including for electronic devices and aerospace. Specifically, a team at City University of Hong Kong created a ceramic ink using a mixture of polymers and ceramic nanoparticles that can print ceramic precursors that are soft and can be stretched three times beyond their initial length.
