National Association of Manufacturers The Federal Reserve reported that manufacturing production rebounded in February, up 1.2 percent, after edging down 0.2 percent in January. That was the fastest monthly pace of growth since October, and overall, the data continue to show healthy growth for manufacturers, with strength last year carrying over into this year. Indeed, manufacturing production has risen 2.5 percent over the past 12 months, up from 1.6 percent last month and the best year-over-year rate since July 2014.

New York Times Since October, a mysterious flying object has been seen moving through the skies over the South Island of New Zealand. It looks like a cross between a small plane and a drone, with a series of rotor blades along each wing that allow it to take off like a helicopter and then fly like a plane. It turns out that the airborne vehicle has been part of a series of "stealth" test flights by a company called Kitty Hawk, personally financed by Larry Page, the co-founder of Google and now the chief executive of Google’s parent company, Alphabet.

3D Print.com The US Navy has found many uses for the application of 3D printing technology, from making replacement parts and drones at sea to 3D printing a manual primary globe valve. This last was completed by engineers from the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) in Virginia, which is a big proponent of additive manufacturing, having hosted a 3D print-a-thon back in 2016 and joining Desktop Metal’s Pioneer Program.

Venture Beat Metal 3D printing company Desktop Metal has raised $65 million in a round of funding led by Ford, with participation from Future Fund. Founded in 2015, Burlington, Massachusetts-based Desktop Metal is setting out to make 3D metal printing more accessible to manufacturing and engineers outside highly specialized industries as well as reducing costs and turnaround times for companies that already manufacturing metal-based goods.
