Orlando Sentinel Lockheed Martin is planning to add 500 new jobs at its Missiles and Fire Control plant in South Orlando, Fla., and the defense contractor is seeking $3.5 million in incentives for the expansion. Lockheed will pay the 500 new employees an average salary of $87,000 according to a proposed county resolution to authorize the tax refunds. The hiring would be phased in over the next five years. Mining.com With Chinese and U.S. traders on a break, the iron ore market took a breather on Monday after wild price swings saw the steelmaking raw material fall to a more than seven-month low on Friday. The Northern China import price of 62 percent Fe content ore is down 15 percent for in May trading at $57.80 per dry metric tonne, the lowest since mid-October according to data supplied by The Steel Index.

National Association of Manufacturers Data continued to reflect some easing in manufacturing activity, even as the longer-term trend has been favorable. For instance, new durable goods orders declined 0.7 percent in April, ending four straight months of gains. New orders have edged up just 0.9 percent since April 2016, but excluding transportation, the year-over-year gain was 4.9 percent. The bottom line is that new orders for core capital goods (or nondefense capital goods excluding aircraft) remained flat in April after six consecutive months of growth.

Recode In the long run, many think that automation and robotics are going to replace a significant percentage, if not the overwhelming majority, of manufacturing jobs. That’s certainly a possibility. But for now, even as companies add more robots to North American factory floors, the number of human jobs in manufacturing is also on the rise. In April, 12.4 million Americans worked in manufacturing, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s up by about 25,000 jobs from a year prior, and almost a million from early 2010. But it’s still down by about one third, or more than six million jobs, from 1980.

Machine Design Despite some bumps in the road, the subscription model is generally considered a success in the auto and farming industries. One place where subscription or leasing seems to be particularly effective is in aerospace. GE and Rolls Royce have started renting their engines by the hour rather than having the airlines purchase them. Such a system might work better in aerospace rather than vehicles, tractors, or manufacturing equipment, as it is highly regulated. Of course, road vehicles have regulations, too, but they are not nearly as strict as aviation rules, regulations and litigious concerns.
