One only has to see the latest news from automotive upstarts like Tesla, Uber and Alphabet’s Waymo — or even from evolving industry stalwarts like GM — to know that the very concept of automobiles is undergoing rapid change. While developments around self-driving autonomous vehicles might garner the most attention, there are a number of other shifts occurring that are fundamentally altering how cars are designed, made, and used — helping to shape the future of cars themselves.

Most of the conversations regarding the Internet of Things (IoT) tend to focus on consumer applications, and how a world of wireless interconnected devices that are constantly in conversation with each other can improve our lives in both novel and meaningful ways. While these tools run the gamut from gaming to healthcare, the underlying premise of IoT — Technology that has the ability to constantly learn about its users, adapt to their needs and ultimately connect them to each other — is a concept that has resonance far beyond just the consumer realm.

Russia's new jetliner, which conducted its maiden flight on Sunday, may have a hard time challenging the sales duopoly of Boeing and Airbus, but it does point the way to radical changes in how they could be building jets in the future.

Data continued to reflect some easing in manufacturing activity, even as the longer-term trend has been favorable. For instance, new durable goods orders declined 0.7 percent in April, ending four straight months of gains. New orders have edged up just 0.9 percent since April 2016, but excluding transportation, the year-over-year gain was 4.9 percent. The bottom line is that new orders for core capital goods (or nondefense capital goods excluding aircraft) remained flat in April after six consecutive months of growth.

(Video) For manufacturers considering additive manufacturing (AM) to enhance their capabilities, there are a couple of ways at looking at the process: either in terms of production machinery that can be installed on a liner, or as a service. In this video, we learn how manufacturers can partner with AM experts to develop parts and prototypes off-site, capitalizing on unique services and material offerings. General Electric is one such expert, having found significant advantages in 3D printing parts for the aerospace industry.

In the long run, many think that automation and robotics are going to replace a significant percentage, if not the overwhelming majority, of manufacturing jobs. That’s certainly a possibility. But for now, even as companies add more robots to North American factory floors, the number of human jobs in manufacturing is also on the rise. In April, 12.4 million Americans worked in manufacturing, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s up by about 25,000 jobs from a year prior, and almost a million from early 2010. But it’s still down by about one third, or more than six million jobs, from 1980.

Despite some bumps in the road, the subscription model is generally considered a success in the auto and farming industries. One place where subscription or leasing seems to be particularly effective is in aerospace. GE and Rolls Royce have started renting their engines by the hour rather than having the airlines purchase them. Such a system might work better in aerospace rather than vehicles, tractors, or manufacturing equipment, as it is highly regulated. Of course, road vehicles have regulations, too, but they are not nearly as strict as aviation rules, regulations and litigious concerns.
