Global Manufacturing

Customer and experience are two words that you don’t often encounter in the manufacturing industry. On the whole, manufacturing is an industry focused on the product – rather than how it is presented to the customer – and to some extent, rightly so. But recent research by Gallup reveals 71 percent of B2B companies are at risk of losing customers by not being fully engaged with the companies they do business with, and tend to live from RFP to the next.

The European Commission in Brussels is set to propose legislation on Wednesday affecting billions of euros in Chinese exports to the EU. The goal is to meet demands by China for equal treatment in trade cases and to assure EU companies such as steelmaker ArcelorMittal and solar-panel producer Solarworld AG that import tariffs are high enough to protect them from Chinese competitors.

Of the 344,000 manufacturing workers in Tennessee, about a quarter — roughly 77,000 — will retire in the next decade, according to Randy Boyd, Tennessee Economic & Community Development commissioner. The looming gap was behind his office’s recent weeklong effort to tout manufacturing jobs by introducing students to Tennessee manufacturing operations.

The vast boreal forests of northern Alberta, Canada, contain some of the largest oil sands mines in the world. While many of the operations have become in-situ – where the viscous, tarry substance known as bitumen is melted with steam and pumped back to the surface – a good number of them are open-pit mines, where operators rely on gigantic haul trucks and mining shovels to unearth and transport the sticky oil sands for eventual processing into crude oil.

Right now, there is a job crisis in America — but that’s not because of a lack of manufacturing job openings. The crisis is about too few workers to fill those jobs. If the next president does bring jobs back to these shores, he or she may have to bring back workers, too.

Right now there are three major trade agreements being discussed in the public debate via the Presidential election. The North American Free Trade Partnership (NAFTA) and the Central American Free Trade Partnership (CAFTA), which have been in force for 22 and 10 years, respectively, have both become hot-button campaign issues thanks to the political candidates, union activists and other interested parties. The same goes for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), which has been negotiated but not yet ratified.

The U.S. trade deficit shrank in September to the lowest level in more than a year on stronger exports of goods and travel services. The gap narrowed by 9.9 percent to $36.4 billion, the smallest since February 2015, Commerce Department figures showed Friday in Washington. The median forecast in a Bloomberg survey called for a deficit of $38 billion. The value of exports was the highest since July of last year, while imports declined by the most since March.
