Manufacturing.net The backpack-sized jet engine was built by a team of technicians, machinists and engineers who work at a GE Aviation’s Additive Development Center outside Cincinnati, a lab focused on developing additive manufacturing, a next-generation technique that can make complex 3D structures by melting metal powder layer upon layer. They built the engine over the course of several years to test the technology’s abilities and to work on a side project together.

New York Times Kato Manufacturing, based in the blue-collar enclave of Gifu Prefecture, in central Japan, is a microcosm of the country’s industrial evolution. The family-run metal shop, which was started 128 years ago, originally made simple farming tools for what was then a largely agrarian society. When Japan morphed into a manufacturing giant, churning out automobiles and electronics for the world, Kato supplied the metallic equivalent of skeletons: sculpted frames and housings that gave products their shape.

International Shipping News The global shipping industry is suffering from a significant slowdown. Cosco Shipping, a market leader in the Asian shipping industry, reported a rmb7.2bn loss for the first six months of 2016, a quadrupling of their losses compared to the same period last year. This was followed by a bankruptcy filing by Hanjin Shipping, a Large South Korean shipping line, on August 31st. As a result, 66 ships with cargo worth $14.5bn were cast adrift at sea due to concerns about whether docking costs would be paid.
