All in, manufacturers added 30,000 workers on net in 2015, well below the 215,000 workers hired in 2014.

IndustryWeek The U.S. Manufacturing Technology Orders report for November is out, and the numbers are up for the month, though still down for the year.
Order values increased 2.2 percent across the board compared to October, with the biggest industry investment in appliances, automotive, computer and electronics, and HVAC, a trickle-down effect, according to the Association for Manufacturing Technology, of the year’s new housing starts. The year-to-date orders are down 17.2 percent from the same point in 2014.

Manufacturing Business Technology The emergence of intelligent, networked devices — aka the Internet of Things (IoT) — promises major change in many aspects of business. IoT is already being applied in manufacturing, distribution and logistics to do such things as monitor the environmental condition of products during shipment, send an alert when factory equipment needs maintenance, and track the speed, safety, and fuel efficiency of trucks and their drivers. Manufacturers and other businesses that aren’t paying attention today will face tough competition from competitors tomorrow.

IndustryWeek As an industry, manufacturing is "hot." Regions are creating manufacturing initiatives, countries are creating policies to lure manufacturing back and prepare the next generation of talent, maker fairs show entrepreneurs and small-scale artisans how they too can design and manufacture their own products, what manufacturers sell goes well beyond the 100-year-old recipe and the mechanical drawings, and new technologies are changing the economies of scale so that large- and small-scale value chains can be successful.
