DOD press release
The Department of Defense today announced the award of six (6) grants totaling $25 million under the Defense Manufacturing Community Support Program by the Office of Economic Adjustment. These awards follow a competitive selection process culminating in Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment Ellen Lord’s designation of six Defense Manufacturing Communities on August 16, 2020, and for the Office of Economic Adjustment to invite grant applications to strengthen the national security innovation base.

Building on its 135-year legacy in Milwaukee, Komatsu Mining Corp. officially broke ground earlier this month for its new state-of-the-art headquarters and manufacturing campus in Milwaukee’s Harbor District.

Gear Solutions
The low-pitch and bearing velocities, fewer gear engagements, and uni-directional separation forces of an orbitless drive result in high-speed ratings and low NVH levels at the expense of decreased ratio and load capacity, making it particularly viable as a primary stage.

Gear Solutions
Choosing the best gear finishing method often comes down to production volume, processing cycle times and gear profiles.

For 2020, and due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, AGMA is hosting the Fall Technical Meeting online. The technical experts have chosen ten incredible papers that will be presented by the researchers in a pre-recorded video to share out with attendees. Those who sign up will have two weeks to watch these presentations and prepare questions for the presenters. On October 20, there you will get to see and hear these presenters live to ask your questions and to network with other attendees!

Today’s Motor Vehicles
Paccar’s Kenworth K270E Class 6 and K370E Class 7 battery-electric vehicles qualify for a $95,000 voucher incentive to qualifying California purchasers from the California Air Resources Board (CARB). The incentive, offered through CARB’s Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP), is part of California Climate Investments, a statewide initiative that puts billions of cap-and-trade dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy, and improving public health and the environment — particularly in disadvantaged communities.

According to a recent international study, aviation is responsible for 3.5 percent of all human activities that drive climate change. Airbus is looking to a cleaner future for the commercial aircraft industries, where hydrogen powers the (local) zero-emissions aircraft of tomorrow.

Design News
Researchers have been searching for various ways to control defects in the 3D printing process that can create parts and objects that are functionally compromised. The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory has teamed up with Texas A&M University to develop a solution that uses temperature and its relationship to the stability of an object to help solve this problem in the printing of metal objects.

AGMA has released the ANSI/AGMA 9009-E20, Flexible Couplings - Nomenclature for Flexible Couplings publication. This standard presents the nomenclature common to flexible couplings as used in mechanical power transmission drives. It does not address nomenclature for flexible shafts, quill shafts, universal joints or devices that exhibit slip such as clutches, fluid couplings, magnetic couplings or torque converters. The standard was prepared to reduce the language barriers that arise between designers, manufacturers and users when attempting to designate or describe various types of flexible couplings and their elements.

The COVID-19 pandemic is poised to prompt changes in the way manufacturers use automation. CEO Jason Walker and part of his team at Waypoint Robotics had just returned from the Modex 2020 show in Atlanta when the governor of his company’s home state imposed a stay-at-home order because of COVID-19.

Machine Design
In the industrial sector, continually improved technology, including smarter sensors and more computational capabilities, have made it easier and more practical than ever to gather reams of data (i.e., “big data”). Visualization has also become an important component of analytics and data-driven decision-making. But with so many new options, it is natural to question how industrial companies can best manage the vast amount of data available from sensors, machines and processes, and transform this data to actionable information.

2020 may seem to be a year of upended supply chains spelling disaster for the manufacturing sector, but a decentralized approach is proving to be more than simply resilient — agile responses via digital manufacturing networks are gaining strength. Networks leveraging Industry 4.0 technologies like additive manufacturing (3D printing) offer more localized production to keep operations afloat during times of disruption.
