It's an all-hands — and robotic arms — on deck period in American history with manufacturers across the country leveraging technology to help combat COVID-19. Most medical supplies still come from overseas, while closer-to-home efforts are smaller scale and just getting underway. Still, advanced (automation/additive) manufacturing has mobilized, indeed galvanized, in a spirited way.

Institute for Supply Management press release
Economic activity in the manufacturing sector contracted in March, and the overall economy grew for the 131st consecutive month, say the nation’s supply executives in the latest Manufacturing ISM® Report on Business®. The report was issued by Timothy R. Fiore, CPSM, C.P.M., Chair of the Institute for Supply Management® (ISM®) Manufacturing Business Survey Committee: "The March PMI® registered 49.1%, down 1 percentage point from the February reading of 50.1%. AGMA Webinar: The End of the World … and Other opportunities | April 15 | 1:00pm Eastern
Three speakers from the AGMA/ABMA Annual Meeting will be providing webinars in coming months. Our first is next week with Peter Zeihan: The era of globalization is dependent upon freedom of the seas, American security overwatch, and a global consumer base—all of which were coming to an end before coronavirus erupted upon the world. The pre-coronavirus pace of change, already among the most rapid in history, has now accelerated greatly. Join us as Peter Zeihan walks us through the causes and consequences, the actions and inactions, which have made and are unmaking our world.

Despite political turbulence, Canada’s wind energy sector continues to gain strength, offering many opportunities for machine shops. To enter the wind energy supply chain, however, it helps to be fast, nimble and capable of handling really big parts.

Steel and mining company ArcelorMittal is using Additive Industries’ metal 3D printing technology to produce spare parts on demand. The companies began working together in 2017, with ArcelorMittal installing a MetalFAB1 platform to take advantage of its potential to reduce physical inventory and shorten production cycles.

Additive manufacturing for metal parts has a constraint: the requirement for support structures to be added and later removed. When contemplating a workflow that excludes support structure creation and removal, most will focus on the reduction of time and the elimination of cost. These are real outcomes, but they undervalue the larger gains that can be realised by those that use metal AM. Here, six companies contribute their experiences, expectations, and insights.

Today’s Motor Vehicles
General Motors (GM) and Honda will jointly develop two electric vehicles (EVs) for Honda, based on GM’s flexible global EV platform powered by proprietary Ultium batteries. The exteriors and interiors of the new EVs will be designed by Honda, and the platform will be engineered to support Honda’s driving character.

GM Today
Can General Motors finally convince buyers it’s a leader in electric vehicle vehicles and technology? With billions of dollars on the line and high-profile EVs in development for all its brnads, the stakes have never been higher. GM has (briefly) been the auto industry leader in EV technology at least three times since the mid-90s, with little to show for it.

UK firm Equipmake has used 3D-printing to create a super-cool EV motor that is more power-intensive than conventional examples. The new Ampere motor-generator from British Firm Equipmake is a small and light package that makes very high power. Its low weight, low-inertia components, less mass in which unwanted heat can be stored and superior liquid cooling all contribute to a power-to-weight ratio more than four times greater than that of existing EV motor tech.

Today’s Motor Vehicles
As expected by the millions of Americans waiting for the latest news on the spread of COVID-19, automotive sales fell sharply in March. Several companies reported March and Q1 numbers on Wednesday, and the reports are as ugly as expected.

Jonathan Wright recently submitted a thesis to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at The University of Sheffield, exploring 3D printing with tungsten, a rare metal. In ‘Additive Manufacturing of Tungsten via Selective Laser Melting and Electron Beam Melting,’ Wright details the potential for powder bed additive layer manufacturing (ALM) of pure tungsten, using both selective laser melting (SLM) and electron beam melting (EBM).

For years, the EMAG Group has a partner, one of the few machine builders that covers the entire process chain from soft to hard machining. Now, experts are taking the next step with the creation of EMAG Systems and combining their project engineering expertise. The new company is the perfect partner for creating turnkey solutions and is responsible for the overall project – combining the experience and knowledge of the various EMAG branches when necessary.

Digital platforms marrying companies seeking fast, cost-effective production with others who have manufacturing capacity are increasingly streamlining supply chains, bringing benefits to all parties. MaaS operators in areas such as machining and 3D printing are offering the demand/capacity balancing that has been seen in other areas like Uber and Air BnB, suggests Professor Rab Scott, head of digital, University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC).

Australian eMachine-builder HyperPower has commenced production of its "QFM-360-X" — an electric motor that the company claims to be the world's first MegaWatt "extreme-duty" unit. Despite its diminutive 43-centimetre width, one single QFM-360-X can produce up to one MegaWatt. HyperPower says the QFM-360-X's design has been future-proofed to cater for other non-automotive scenarios, such as light rail and certain high speed rail applications where reliability and serviceability are critical.

Ceramics have been a hot trend in 3D printing materials for a while now. While more commonly associated with pottery or kitchenware, ceramic is literally everywhere in our daily lives, and it’s used extensively in various industries. Producing complex parts with ceramics is challenging and costly with 3D printing. This is why so much has been invested in new printing techniques.

The Daily Review
Department of Community of Economic Development Secretary Dennis Davin announced the creation of the Pennsylvania Manufacturing Call to Action Portal Saturday, which will mobilize manufacturers that are producing COVID-19-related products and supplies or can pivot to producing COVID-19-related supplies.
