Lockheed Martin says it is spending $142 million and hiring 326 new workers over the next few years as it expands its south Arkansas facility. The Maryland-based company on Monday announced the expansion of its plant in Camden, about 85 miles southwest of Little Rock. The Camden facility currently employs about 700 workers. The expansion will support new construction and improve existing facilities for products such as the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, Army Tactical Missile System and others, plus new machinery and equipment. The company and Gov. Asa Hutchinson announced the expansion at the Paris Air Show.

The rapid rate of additive manufacturing (AM) hardware innovation over the last few years has ushered in new eras of speed, performance and (so-called) world-firsts. In fact, we’ve been so maxed out on hardware innovation that TCT columnist Todd Grimm recently spoke about celebrating the steady march away from full blown hardware launches towards refinements and features as a sign of the industry’s progress.

5G is being hailed as the key to Industry 4.0, and commercial public networks are already beginning to roll out with great fanfare. Unfortunately, what often isn’t said is that 5G’s specific industrial features are not expected to be part of the 5G standard until 2021. Even then, there will be a lag as 5G chip and device vendors bring industrial 5G devices to market.

CASE STUDY DOWNLOAD: Barkhausen Noise vs. Nital Etch
With Barkhausen noise analysis, you can detect near surface stress and micro structural defects due to improper heat treatment and grinding. Unlike traditional nital etch, Barkhausen noise analysis is non-destructive, objective, and repeatable.
  • No scrap or consumables
  • No chemical disposals
  • Safer laboratory and work space
  • Improved traceability and process optimization
In this case study, find out how one transmission manufacturer leverages Barkhausen noise analysis to significantly improve the safety and accuracy of their inspection and cut costs.

These days, when a major automaker unveils an electric car, it gets a lot of press. That's because electric cars are cool, special and futuristic. Someday, though, electric cars will just be cars. But when will that happen? When will electric cars no longer be a novelty item for early adopters? When will customers be willing to consider them regardless of government incentives, just as they would a gasoline-powered car today?

The Robot Report
Continuing improvements in software and hardware are leading to trends such as Manufacturing-as-a-Service, hyper-personalization of products on demand, and a reinvention of the capital goods economy, found a new study. Last month, GP Bullhound issued a new report titled "Smart Manufacturing: The Rise of the Machines." The report provided a global, in-depth look at how smart manufacturing gained momentum between 2013 and 2018.

Today’s Motor Vehicles
Talk to electric vehicle (EV) supporters, and many will use the economics argument. Sure, EVs cost more to purchase, but electricity is cheaper than gasoline, so after a few years, you’ve saved enough to justify the purchase. So clearly, it’s time to put a $310,000 deposit down to reserve the $2.1 million (starting price) Lotus Evija, what the sportscar company says will be the first British electric hypercar when it launches next year.
