Toyota’s top U.S. executive says car sales nationwide have nearly bottomed out and his company will keep making them despite a dramatic shift to trucks and SUVs. U.S. CEO Jim Lentz told the Detroit Economic Club Wednesday that car sales fell below 30 percent of sales last month, and he thinks that’s close to the bottom.

Fiat Chrysler will open another assembly plant in the Detroit area, according to a person familiar with the automaker’s plan. The source said the plant will produce SUVs but did not specify when it will open or how many jobs it will create. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the plan has not been made public.

Aerospace Manufacturing and Design
Advanced vision systems could ensure high-quality, reproducible parts from 3D printers. Researchers at the U.S. Department at Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago have added an infrared camera to the high-energy X-ray source at Argonne’s Advanced Photon Source to allow researchers to measure thermal signatures across surfaces in real-time. The camera was funded through a Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) program as part of Argonne’s Manufacturing Science and Engineering Program.
