Here’s a figure that might give manufacturers the chills: 70 percent. That’s the percentage of manufacturing companies listed on the Fortune 1000 in 2008 that have since vanished. How did the other 30 percent manage to stay alive? By adjusting to radical market shifts, investing in new technology, adapting their business models to stay in the game and, more recently, by leaning into artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT).

Porsche's chief executive says the sports car maker won't produce any new diesel models in the wake of parent company Volkswagen's diesel emissions scandal. CEO Oliver Blume told Sunday's Bild am Sonntag newspaper that, although Porsche itself never developed and produced diesel engines, its image has suffered from the scandal that erupted in 2015.

The Internet of Things (IoT) has completely changed our lives as we are now able to interact with other people, and our own things, wherever we are and whenever we want to. A side effect, however, is that we are now more susceptible to cyberattacks than ever before, as our private data is no longer private and our devices are interconnected on all fronts.

Toyoda Machinery
High-Speed Axis Synchronization Technology – The Newest Innovation Redefining Gear Manufacturing
High-speed synchronization technology has reshaped standard gear manufacturing by producing parts with more accuracy, less time, and less cost. Built into Toyoda's Gear Skiving Machining Centers, this innovative technology takes five processes, traditionally spread across five separate machines, and integrates them into one compact machining center.

Gain a solid and fundamental understanding of gear geometry, types and arrangements, and design principles. Starting with the basic definitions of gears, conjugate motion, and the Laws of Gearing, learn the tools needed to understand the inter-relation and coordinated motion operating within gear pairs and multi-gear trains. Basic gear system design process and gear measurement and inspection techniques will also be explained. In addition, the fundamentals of understanding the step-wise process of working through the iterative design process required to generate a gear pair will be reviewed. Learn the steps and issues involved in design refinement and some manufacturing considerations. As explanation of basic gear measurement techniques, how measurement equipment and test machines implement these techniques, and how to interpret the results from these basic measurements will also be covered.

Millennials and later generations were born into a digital world. They've been fed on video games, and it means they learn and play differently from older generations. Millennials are totally comfortable with technology, and research has shown that they crave variety in media and are born multitaskers, so they can't just sit and listen to a talking head, the way earlier generations used to.

Machine Design
3D design and printing technology has advanced at an alarming rate. We can now print complex objects from different materials, in different colors, in rapid time — even in the comfort of our own homes. Then there’s the varied commercial applications for 3D printing (3DP).

Aside from "recumbent bicycles" there hasn’t been too much innovation in the cycling field. Sure, certain materials have made bikes lighter-weight or faster, but the fundamental structure of a bicycle has never been drastically altered. That is, until Halfbike. Halfbike has fundamentally re-imagined the 200-year old transportation technology that we have come known as a "bicycle."

Subscriptions for high-end vehicles are emerging as serious alternatives to traditional car ownership, with the likes of Porsche, Audi and BMW all recently launching services to that effect. Polestar made mention of a similar option for its forthcoming debut hybrid earlier this year, and has now shared more details on how the not-so-well heeled can get their mitts on its first luxury sedan.

Where’s my 3D-printed car? For that matter, where’s my 3D-printed house or clothing or smartphone? 3D printing was supposed to be the biggest technological game-changer since the PC. But what have we gotten for the past three decades? Trinkets, art projects, prototypes and the occasional medical or aerospace pièce de résistance.

Last week, Autodesk hosted the Accelerate 2018 conference at their new office in downtown Toronto. Autodesk Accelerate has traditionally been heavily focused on PLM, but this year a new topic took center stage: generative design, a fairly new addition to the company’s engineering software portfolio. The technology allows users to specify constraints and load cases for a mechanical design, to which it generates dozens or even hundreds of possible designs.
