The ISM manufacturing index unexpectedly jumped to the highest since May 2004 as orders, production and employment all picked up, offering a positive sign for the economy even as trade tensions weigh on the outlook.
The pace of hiring in the United States quickened in August, and wages grew at their fastest pace in nine years — evidence that employers remain confident despite the Trump administration's ongoing conflicts with its trading partners. The economy added a strong 201,000 jobs, and the unemployment rate stayed at 3.9 percent, near an 18-year low, the government said in the August monthly jobs report.

A number of companies offer metal 3D printing, which creates products and components layer by layer with a computer-controlled system tracing its lineage to ordinary inkjet printers. But on Monday, print giant HP announced it’s entered the market with the ambition to dramatically lower prices, courtesy of a $400,000 product called Metal Jet.

Siemens, alongside its development partner Verkehrsbetrieb Potsdam (ViP), will present their findings at InnoTrans 2018 to show how a tram will drive autonomously in real traffic. It is anticipated that the project will reveal the technological challenges of autonomous driving under everyday conditions, which can then be developed and tested to accelerate research.

Tata Steel has introduced an environment-friendly steel production technology known as Hlsarna. This technology is being tested at Tata Steel’s Ijmuiden site in the Netherlands. The current Hlsarna pilot plant can produce around 60,000 tons of liquid iron annually.

MIT BOFFINS have created a system that enables robots to understand and manipulate objects they’ve never seen before. Researchers at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) have presented a paper describing the new computer vision system called Dense Object Nets (DON).

JETcopter, a VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) aviation start-up, has launched tests of a new type propulsion system for VTOL aircraft. This new propulsion system consists of two centrifugal air turbines in enclosed housings, each 200cm in diameter, that will rotate in opposite directions at a high RPM to create thrust similar to 11m diameter helicopters rotors.
