Boeing and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries have announced an agreement to strengthen their collaboration to enhance the competitive edge of both businesses. This includes joint efforts to reduce costs in Mitsubishi’s production of wings for the 787 Dreamliner, plus studies into advanced aerostructure technologies for future generations of commercial aircraft.
This report is the third in a four-part series on the state of the manufacturing industry in 2017. We'll be releasing a new section of this exclusive report every week in October as part of's month-long celebration of Manufacturing Day. 
Ten students with a focus of a career in the gear industry received AGMA Foundation Scholarship awards for the 2017-2018 academic year. Each fall, the Foundation awards $5,000 scholarships at the Undergraduate/Graduate levels, and $2,000 scholarships at the Associate/Technical school levels. Eighty-six percent of scholarship recipients are employed in the gear industry!

A new finding by MIT researchers could have implications for how 3D printed surface coating is carried out. The technique employs the use of self-peeling metallic droplets and increased adhesion through thermal control of the surface. They can also increase the adhesive capabilities of the droplets by changing their relative temperature to the surface.

Gartner named the concept of a "digital twin" one of the top ten strategic technology trends of 2017, predicting that within three to five years, they will represent billions of physical assets, systems or processes.
Rice University engineer Sibani Lisa Biswal and her colleagues used their unique microfluidic devices, instruments that use a small amount of fluid on a microchip to perform a test, to examine four commercial chemical dispersants that curtail the buildup of asphaltene in wells and pipelines. The devices allowed them to watch how the dispersants react with asphaltenes.
Imagine you’re getting ready to leave on vacation. You hop in your car to gas up and a "check transmission" error message pops up. You head to the dealer, they find the problem, and the part will take five days to arrive at the shop. However, you’re leaving in one. Now, imagine your dealer has access to a local 3-D printer and can manufacture that part on demand, taking 1-2 days instead of five. It’s a future vision that’s on its way to becoming reality.
