Explore just what High Profile Contact Ratio (HCR) gears are and under what circumstances they can be an advantage. Learn when HCR gears are not appropriate and why. This fast paced session will cover the detailed tooth geometry changes that are required to effectively achieve optimum performance and benefit. We will discuss how the load distribution along the involute profile changes when the contact ratio increases above two. Because of the longer, generally more slender teeth on a HCR gear the heat treatment and profile modifications that are required for good performance are distinctly different from those for a standard contact ratio gear. The load capacity rating of HCR gears requires the application of modified AGMA analyses as the AGMA Standards specifically do NOT address gears with profile contact ratios greater than 2.0 thus we will also cover the changes required to successfully rate HCR gears.

The Eurozone manufacturing sector expanded further. The Markit Flash Eurozone Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) posted a strong reading of 57.4 in August from 56.6 in July. Both output and new orders rose sharply, stemming from the fastest pace in export growth in six-and-a-half years. Germany continued to post a strong reading with 59.4 in August, up from 58.1 in July. Strong manufacturing indicators continued in France as well, with a 55.8 Flash Manufacturing PMI in August from 54.9 in July. This also marked the highest level in more than six years for both countries.

Ford's Dagenham diesel engine plant is a marvel of mechanization — a steel and chrome hangar full of LED lighting, robots and computer-controlled machine tools. The U.S. carmaker has invested $2.5 billion in the plant, where 3,150 people churn out an engine every 30 seconds. And they've been here a long time: Edsel Ford, son of founder Henry Ford, personally cut the sod to start construction of the company's U.K. manufacturing headquarters in 1929.

Because of their unique contribution to the operation of so many machines and mechanical devices, gears have received special attention from the technical community for more than two millennia. New developments in gear technology, particularly from the materials and heat treatment perspectives, have improved gear performance. This course, which is held at Gear Expo2017 and developed jointly by AGMA and ASM International, will provide an overview of materials selection and heat treatment of gears.

The music industry has experienced rapid change in the last 20 years. We’ve seen the decline of cassettes, the rise and fall of CDs and the move towards digital music downloads. The manufacturing industry is no different, having increased its digital processes, changing the way the industry operates and work is done. One role that is changing significantly is that of the maintenance engineer. Here, Jonathan Wilkins, marketing director at obsolete equipment supplier EU Automation, discusses how Industry 4.0 is changing the way businesses approach maintenance.

'Strategy' has been a term bandied about by many an agency and consultant for years. It has lost it's luster with some small-to-mid sized manufacturers for a multitude of reasons. Many times, strategic consultants will come into a company, implement a high-level evaluation of markets, competitors, and industries, and deliver a thick document, outlining the details of their extensive research and interviews, including an executive summary on areas for the business to focus on. All good and well, but here comes the rub.
