Throughout the dismal presidential campaign, the plight of America’s manufacturing sector played a central role. Yet despite all the concerns raised about factory jobs leaving the country, all but 18 of the country’s 70 largest metropolitan regions have seen an uptick in industrial employment since 2011. And despite the slowdown in car sales, the job count continues to expand, albeit more slowly.
New orders for key U.S.-made capital goods unexpectedly fell in May and shipments also declined, suggesting a loss of momentum in the manufacturing sector halfway through the second quarter. The Commerce Department said on Monday that non-defense capital goods orders excluding aircraft, a closely watched proxy for business spending plans, dropped 0.2 percent, the largest decline since December.

Last week was a slower one for indicators, but the data points that were released reflected mostly positive trends, with the global economy showing signs of continued progress. Along those lines, the IHS Markit Flash Eurozone Manufacturing PMI rose once again to its fastest pace since April 2011. This suggests that manufacturers in Europe have mostly brushed off political uncertainties, with economic growth on the continent continuing to trend in the right direction. New orders and output accelerated further in June, with both at levels not seen since early 2011. Looking ahead six months, the future output index reflected healthy expectations moving forward, with that measure at its highest point since it was introduced in mid-2012. In addition, IHS Markit also released preliminary figures for France and Germany, which were both promising despite mixed results in June.

Some 50-plus new metrics, which always lag the business initiatives in practice, are typically tried out by companies and analysts as they learn their way to success. People talk. Researchers research. Articles are written. Eventually, the cream rises to the top after a couple decades and five to 10 become frequently used.
Manufacturing Business Technology
While the rate of digital transformation and technology adoption varies across manufacturing organizations, one thing is certain — organizations need to onboard their employees in a way that enables them to be productive at the onset. Onboarding new employees to their preferences remains a challenge for many organizations. The next generation of employees will be even more connected than today. With Generation Z — the first true digital natives — beginning to enter the workforce, manufacturers need a simple and effective way to onboard these employees. They won’t just want a streamlined and technologically sophisticated process — they’ll expect it.

A persistent claim in the B2B universe is that content marketing programs are not effective for manufacturers. The old wisdom says highly technical buyers are immune to content marketing messages. But data from Content Marketing Institute’s 2017 Manufacturing Content Marketing survey show the benefits of content marketing are becoming clearer to manufacturers, and that must mean that these technical buyers are buying in.

BMW, which has already invested $7 billion in South Carolina, also unveiled its 2018 BMW X3, a compact sports vehicle expected to be available in November. It will be built at the plant in Greer alongside the BMW X4, X5 and X6.
The Internet of Things (IoT) means everyday objects are now creating data and connecting to the internet. The result is more data — a lot more data. Data we can use in ways we could not have imagined even 10 years ago. Watches now monitor our sleep and keep track of our activities, TVs understand what we say, golf clubs tell us how to improve our swing, and cars, planes or ships make autonomous journeys.
